FA Trophy trip to Ilford gives us a break from the humdrum of the League, says Mark Lane

WHITSTABLE TOWN eased their relegation fears with their first home win over Sittingbourne for 20 years and now prepare for a trip to the soul-less Cricklefield Stadium to face Ilford in the Preliminary Round of the FA Trophy on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Foxes, who welcome Waltham Abbey tonight, are presently sitting fourth from bottom in the Ryman League Division One North table, with a record of one win and one draw from their first six games and Whitstable boss Mark Lane is looking forward to his first visit to Ilford.
“We’re going to a different ground that we’ve not been to, taking a coach so it gives a bit of spontaneity and a chance to build a bit of team spirit,” Lane told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
The Oystermen were knocked out of the FA Cup by Ryman Premier League side Canvey Island last weekend. The Essex side welcome Blue Square Bet South side Dartford in the penultimate qualifying round on 9 October.
Lane said: “The lads have had a tough shift over the last couple of weeks, a couple of draws away, then a tough game against Canvey (in the FA Cup), where we played very well.
“I don’t think the FA Trophy is a hindrance. It, and the three games in the FA Cup, gives us a break from the humdrum of the League.
“I might go to Ilford and play a different side, injuries permitting, and that’s no disrespect to anybody, but I’ve got a big squad and need to give everyone a game.”
Goals from Dave Cory and Gareth Cornhill defeated a Sittingbourne side that went into the Ryman League Division One South clash in sixth place in the table.
Whitstable climbed up four places to sixteenth – four points clear of relegation – and Lane says he is pleased that his side are turning the corner.
He said: “You know, three games unbeaten for us is pretty good and I can’t ask for any more than that.”
