Faversham coaching job comes at right time for Metcalf
KEVIN METCALF is looking forward to getting back onto the training ground on Saturday - after two and a half seasons out of the game recharging his batteries, writes Stephen McCartney.
The former Tunbridge Wells boss was tonight unveiled as Faversham Town’s new coach and he’s looking forward to his new challenge.
The 49-year-old Tenterden resident has kept in touch with Kent League football since his split from the Culverden Stadium club, watching plenty of games, and is relishing Saturday’s first training session with his new club.
“There’s been a few offers, I’ve looked at a few, but the time’s right for me at the moment,” Metcalf told www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight.
And Metcalf is looking forward to working with Justin Luchford and Jimmy Strouts at Salters Lane.
He said: “The signings and the players’ side I’ve left to Justin and Jimmy - I’m just going to work with the players.
“It’s purely a coaching role. I’m really looking forward to Saturday. I’ve really missed the dressing room and missed the players and everything about football to be honest.
“Jimmy and Justin, they’re a good young management team and I’m going to give them a bit of advice and take Faversham a little bit further than they did last season.
“We’ll see what players turn up, work with them, and put them through their paces.”
Metcalf believes players turning up for training (9am) will be in good shape.
“It only seems they stopped a few weeks ago,” he said. “It’s getting earlier and earlier now, the pre-season.
“It always used to be the first or second week in July. Now it’s June, but the players are naturally fit anyway.”
