Ferkins struggles to rebuild Boro' squad
STEVE FERKINS has revealed that his new-look Greenwich Borough side this season will be young and inexperienced as he struggles to bring players to Harrow Meadow, writes Stephen McCartney.
Several of last season’s squad have left for pastures new, forcing the former Corinthian Casuals’ reserve team manager to start from scratch.
Goalkeepers Michael Holder and Lee Haywood have both signed for their Kent League rivals VCD Athletic and another rival, Croydon, have snapped up Winfred Gnaly, Ben Yiadom, Dave Waters and Mohammed Badar from last season’s Boro’ squad.
Thamesmead Town, who are looking ahead to their first Ryman League Division One South campaign, have today unveiled the signings of attacking midfielder Peter Smith and defender Danny Moore from Harrow Meadow.
And Ferkins, speaking on the revamped Boro’ website www.greenwichboroughfc.co.uk, admitted: “We’ve got a massive task in front of us. I’d like to firstly thank all my former players (at Corinthian Casuals) who have decided not to join me at Greenwich. All the best in the world with their careers, they have been a pleasure to work with.
“Many have decided to move to Ryman League clubs or stay at clubs nearer to where they are based.
“The five lads that have stayed with me know exactly how hard this season will be. We are now in the process of building a new team.
“Trials are ongoing (and) we are light in many, many departments and obviously losing a whole team is not a good start but I respect their decisions and wish them the best.
“Budget wise we are unable to challenge with the big boys for signatures but I will be quite happy with what I manage to sign.
“I have promised them all Kebabs but that doesn’t work! Judging by the trialists, we will have a very, very young squad, which in one respect is good but a little experience would be handy at this level knowing how physical it is.
“But if it doesn’t come, so be it. We will set off with a squad just out of nappies.”
