“The board has already agreed that we will seek to appoint a caretaker manager in time for the Tuesday game against Concord Rangers, Mr Piper told www.margate-fc.com.

The club published the following statement on it’s official website to explain why Southend based O’Connell - a former player during their stint in the top-flight of non-league football - parted company with the Hartsdown Park club.

“The directors of Margate Football Club have informed manager Iain O’Connell that he will not be offered new contract terms for next season.

“This decision was based solely on the club’s results and has resulted with Iain leaving his position with immediate effect.

“The directors would like to thank Iain for his total commitment and dedication to his duties and wish him every success for his future in football.”

Senior players, Craig Cloke, James Pinnock and Wayne Wilson were asked to manage team affairs for their trip to Hendon on Saturday - which nine-man Margate won 3-2.

And Cloke admitted he was disappointed that the man that brought him to Margate, following a lengthy association with Dover Athletic, has gone.

“Most of the players have come in through him,” skipper Cloke told www.margate-fc.com.

“They’ve got a lot of respect for him, because he took a chance on them all, especially me with my big injury.

“But that’s part and parcel of football.  It’s just one of those things.”

Cloke added: “What we did today was what we would have done for him anyway, so it was for him.”

Margate won ten league games this season and this was the reasons why the club parted company with the former Great Wakering Rovers boss.

“We had to look at performance and 10 wins from 33 games is not where we thought we should be this season,” said Mr Piper.

“Finding the right man who is going to deliver to our expectations is going to be difficult but they are out there and we will find him.”
