Fisher appoint Powell as coach

Friday 07th August 2009
DONNA POWELL, who caused a national stir in February when becoming the first female to manage a senior men’s football team in the UK, has been given a permanent role on Fisher's coaching staff.

Powell, who is working on her UEFA A Coaching Badges having already obtained the B Grade, will report directly into manager Gary Lisney as coach working with the first team at the Bulmers Cider Kent League newcomers.
In February, Powell having raised £500.00 for cash strapped Fisher Athletic, was given the opportunity to manage the Fish against Eastleigh in a Blue Square Conference South full league fixture. Athletic were defeated 2-1 by the visitors but Fisher's improved performance brought widespread praise on Powell’s coaching abilities.

“I know the supporters will be delighted by this news,” said club spokesman Joe Arif, when speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk.  “I think it proves that last February wasn't a publicity stunt.

“Since Fisher Athletic was wound up in May, the supporters have worked wonders forming our new club - Fisher FC.

“We've got fine traditions to uphold, first and foremost to serve the community and to provide equal opportunities.  Whether they're male or female simply doesn't come into it.

“Last February, I was shocked to hear that Donna was the first to manage in the men's game. There's something wrong with the world if it took till 2009 for a small club like Fisher to lead the way. Powell possesses the right experience, qualifications and credentials to take on this role - Donna's earned it plain and simple.'

“Obviously I'm delighted to take on this job,” said Powell.  “I want to thank Gary (Lisney) for giving me this opportunity and I hope to be judged like anyone else on results rather than my gender.

“It's an exciting time for Fisher, I love this club and I want to give it my best.“

The Fisher coach added: “It's a dream come true for me, it goes to show if you work hard enough for something you can achieve it - I'm now living proof of that.”.
