Fisher return to their roots for fans' meeting

Monday 18th May 2009
FISHER ATHLETIC may have lost their fight against the Tax Man last Wednesday, but a supporters' meeting is being held in Bermondsey next week to consider resuscitating the south London club, writes Stephen McCartney.
It was only a few years ago that Fisher Athletic were a professional outfit, playing over at Dulwich Hamlet on gates that wouldn’t sustain a semi-professional Ryman League Division One South club.

But the bubble burst, the club reverted back to semi-professional status, and a reported tax bill of around £250,000 forced the club to off load their star players and it was no surprise that the side finished rooted to the foot of the Blue Square South table last season, as there was no money left in the pot for wages.

The south London club were given two stay of executions by The High Court, but it didn’t prove to be third time lucky as the club were wound up last Wednesday, due to their unpaid tax bill.

But loyal supporters are eager to bring the club back to life and an open supporters meeting has been arranged for next Thursday, 28th May at 7:30pm.

The meeting is being hosted by Fisher’s Boxing Department at Fisher Downside, Druid Street, Bermondsey, which is near to Tower Bridge and Shad Thames.

Chairman Martin Eede will head the “open mic” session with the club’s short term future first and foremost on the agenda.

Hon. Vice President Les Rowe urges as many people to attend the make-or-break meeting.

“As well as the fans, our friends at Fisher Downside and many people in Bermondsey are deeply concerned by the current goings on at the club,” he told www.fisherathletic.co.uk

“This is an opportunity for people to voice those concerns and also a chance for us to explore the possibility of going back and playing in Bermondsey once again.”

A statement issued by fans of the club added, “We urge all supporters to make the effort and attend this meeting.  The club’s future is hanging by a thread, this is our chance to make the powers that be sit up and take notice!”
