Fisher to play pre-season games back in Rotherhithe
Thursday 29th April 2010
KENT LEAGUE side Fisher have unveiled plans to return home to their natural home for pre-season matches, writes Stephen McCartney.
Fisher completed it’s first season in the Kent League by finishing their 30-match campaign in the bottom four, having collected nine wins and five draws.
The south London club were quickly re-formed following the demise of Fisher Athletic, who had finished rock bottom of the Blue Square South and were wound up during the final week of the league campaign twelve months ago.
A committed band of supporters quickly re-formed the club and applied to compete in the Kent League and the London Senior Cup.
Manager Gary Lisney put together an amateur side, that played at Dulwich Hamlet’s Champion Hill Stadium free-of-charge and they reached the quarter-finals of the London Senior Cup, losing to Croydon Athletic on penalties, thus missing out on a lucrative trip to Blue Square Premier side AFC Wimbledon, who went on to reach the final, where they too lost on penalties, to Metropolitan Police.
Fisher are already preparing for their second season and have called an Annual General Meeting for next Wednesday, 5th May.
The club request that all supporters and Supporters Trust members attend the meeting, which is being held this year at the Mellish Fields Sports Facility, Rotherhithe, starting at 7:30pm.
The Mellish Fields Sports Facility is literally an extension of Bacon’s College and is where the College’s Football facilities are based.
As well as five pitches there is also bar and conference facilities where the club will hold the AGM in the First Floor Conference Room, accessed via the Mellish Fields reception off Salter Road.
Light refreshments will be provided by the club for all those attending.
Fisher Athletic’s former ground was based at Salter Road, before the club agreed a groundshare move across Southwark at Dulwich Hamlet’s Champion Hill Stadium.
A club statement, issued to www.kentishfootball.co.uk said: “Fisher are keen to continue building relations with Bacon’s College as well as other community related schemes such as Fisher Downside, Time & Talents and Mellish Fields is now seen as a second home within the club’s traditional catchment area.
“Fisher hope to also play pre-season home fixtures at Mellish Fields this summer in preparation for the new season.”
Meanwhile, on-the-pitch, assistant manager, Bryan Glover has been crowned the supporters choice for player-of-the-year.
Glover came out on top in what Martin Eede described as a particularly open race.
The chairman told www.fisherfc.co.uk: “In my time I’ve witnessed many of these awards being handed out and usually it’s by a landslide or someone stands out head and shoulders above the rest but near enough everyone in the entire playing squad received at least one vote which proves that this year really was a team effort.”
Manager Lisney paid tribute to Glover, by telling www.fisherfc.co.uk: “Bryan has been a godsend to me as assistant manager but also on the pitch, he’s kept the team together and been a true leader.
“When the side haven’t been at their best, he’s taken the game by the scruff of the neck and got us playing on many occasions. Gloves fully deserves this award.”
The midfielder wasn’t the only player to receive recognition as all members of the playing squad as well as the club’s committee received a special commemorative medallion for Fisher FC’s inaugural season.
In a particularly nice gesture, skipper Kris Hollidge thanked all the clubs volunteers for their hard work behind the scenes and signed match balls were given out as a token of the team’s thanks.
