Foley brings Nugent to Oakwood

Wednesday 30th September 2009
VCD Athletic have secured the signature of Meshach Nugent from Maidstone United as manager Paul Foley goes back to his former club once more to add to the squad, writes Jeff Perkins.

“Shack” as he is known to the Maidstone faithful is a powerful and pacy goalscorer who has plied his trade for the Stones in recent seasons having signed from Dulwich Hamlet where he was voted player of the year and finished top scorer.

Nugent attracted the attention of clubs higher up the pyramid while with the Stones but elected to stay with the Ryman Premier side but missed the start of the campaign through injury.

Foley moved quickly to sign up his second Maidstone forward in less than two weeks with Nugent following recent signing Aaron Firth to Oakwood.

The highly rated former Crystal Palace youth player is available for next week's rearranged fixture away to Concord Rangers.

Unfortunately the Crayford based side say goodbye to popular forward Sam May who has elected to sign for Holmesdale in the Kent League (where brother Luke is playing also).

The Oakwood outfit  wish May all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts in the green and white shirt, most notably for his superb hat-trick in the
4-0 win away to Greenwich Borough which played a major part in the league title run-in.

Foley, speaking to www.vcd-athletic.co.uk is delighted with his new signing.

“I am delighted to bring Meshach down to Oakwood in what should be a good opportunity for both parties,” he said.

“I have been talking to Alan Walker about the player for some time now and Walks advised that Meshach needed to get some games under his belt.

“It seemed a perfect fit as we were looking for a forward who plays the way that he does.

“Having played against him four seasons ago when he played for Greenwich Borough I know how good a player he is as he gave me a good workout for 90 minutes!

“I did try to sign him the following season but Tamar Hassan was on a film set somewhere and said he couldn't find his number!

“He went on to Dulwich Hamlet and was a big hit scoring regularly and did the same with Walks at Maidstone last year.

“I have no doubt he will be a hit here at Oakwood too. Having lost the services of Sam May and with Uche overseas for two weeks I needed to get another forward in.

“I rarely ask players to stay if they want to go but I did ask Sam to reconsider as I had a lot of time for him as a player and as a lad.

“He is as honest as you can get, as brave as a lion and has plenty of ability too but he wanted to play every week which was always going to be tough with four forwards to choose from. If he starts firing at Holmesdale, who knows we may have to persuade him to come back!

“With Jason Barton, Aaron Firth and now Meshach being added in the last month we are continually strengthening the squad in the areas that need to be targeted. This trio of quality players plus Kane Rice, when he returns from injury, will make a big difference to a side that was not far off anyway and which has proved it belongs in this league on the evidence so far.

“The squad is falling into place and taking shape as it did for the last two seasons at around the same time and we have steadily improved year on year.''
