Foley targets trio ahead of Ryman debut

Tuesday 16th June 2009
VCD ATHLETIC boss Paul Foley says his newly promoted side will not be going into Ryman One North to make the numbers up, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Vickers will be playing in their highest level of football next season, and Foley says he has a team that is equipped for the challenges ahead.

“We are not going into the league to just make up the numbers,” he told www.vcd-athletic.co.uk.

“We will have the same targets and aspirations that we have set down for the last two season’s. Nothing changes.

“There will be more games where we will have to be at our best, but go through our team – Tedder, Rice, Winchcombe, Hegley, Maskell, both Mays, Huggins, Sinden, Hassett, Hogg, Greatorex etc, they have all played in that league and above, so we aren’t punching above our weight but I am not one for making predictions in public. I’ll leave that to others!

“We will keep it all behind the dressing room door as we always do.”

Looking ahead to his pre-season preparations, Foley will start making signings when his squad report back to training.

“We will have a handful of new faces joining us for pre-season training, three at the moment and they are specific players that I have targeted for specific areas of the squad,” he said.

“They will be very strong additions if they decide to sign for us but as I said before I am not one for all of that May/June merry go round!

“If they sign, great, if they don’t, we have other players that we would like to get in.

“We won’t be taking on players for the sake of it that’s for sure and don’t forget the squad that ended the season was definitely the best ever seen at Oakwood.  We are looking alright at the moment.”

Meanwhile, the Crayford based club have confirmed details for the VCD Legends and Guest Allstars’ v Charlton Athletic Legends, which takes place at Oakwood on Sunday, 9th August (1pm).

The likes of Bob Bolder, John Humphries, Mark Penfold, John Bumstead, Colin Walsh, Paul Williams, Simon Webster, Steve Grit, Richie Bowman, Garry Nelson and Sasa Ilic will take on a Vickers’ Legends and Guest’s side, which will include Foley and his assistant Dean Frost and some high-profile ex-professional guests.
