Ford: Get behind our boys and cut out Woking abuse

Wednesday 05th August 2009
WELLING UNITED boss Andy Ford has urged supporters to get behind his team against Woking on Saturday - instead of venting their anger towards familiar old faces, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings open their Blue Square South campaign against full-time Woking at Park View Road and Graham Baker is expected to bring former Wings Tony Sinclair, Harry Harter and Moses Ademola (who has signed on a six-month loan spell from Brentford) with him.

And Ford, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk says the return of his former number two, Jimmy Dack, “adds spice” to the opening day showdown.

“I think they will be one of the favourites for sure, they’ve put a great squad together,” said Ford.

“They’ve handpicked three of our players that were with us last year, players that will be in my first starting eleven without a doubt.

“I’m hoping that we catch them before they bed everything down.  Having full-time players and the squad that they’ve got, they’ve added three good loan players as well for six months, so their squad’s strong.

“It will be a difficult one for us, but one we’re looking forward to.”

But Ford insists the Welling faithful - in a game that should attract a four-figure crowd to Park View Road - must focus all their energies in supporting the team in red.

“I think (winning) would be a good result for us, it would set everything up for us nicely and a great start to the season,” said Ford.

“The fans are always quite supportive, so we haven’t had any problems with them in the past.  I think some of them are looking forward to it with Jim being there last year with me, so that adds a little bit of spice to it - I’m sure there will be a few in there.”

Ford will certainly give Dack a friendly welcome on Saturday, although he wants to take all three points of his new club.

“He was offered full-time football in a management side to it, the club’s near to where he lives so at the end of the day if you put that in front of anybody there’s only one decision he can make,” said Ford.

“It’s a big club so it’s a step forward for him and to work full-time.  I’ve got no problem with the decision that he made really.”

And on picking up three points, Ford added: “It would be most pleasing if we did!”
