GREENWICH BOROUGH manager Gary Alexander says he wants his side to cross the championship winning line tomorrow.

The club will claim the Southern Counties East Football League title with a win over AFC Croydon Athletic at Princes Park Stadium and if they do then they will play Ryman League Division One North or South football at their new ground in Eltham in August.

The club have secured a 30-year lease to own Cray Valley’s Badgers Sports Ground at Middle Park Avenue and have improved facilities at the ground to ensure Ryman League football can be played there if promotion is sealed.

Alexander has only been in charge of the club for sixteen games and has fought off stiff competition from Hollands & Blair to move closer towards the league title.

The former Millwall ace said: “A game in hand against Rochester saw us win 5-0 knowing it would take us seven points clear wasn’t much of a team talk.  The lads knew the job in hand and not only did we go seven points clear we managed to reverse the goal difference and take it over by one having been behind 31 at one point.

“It’s been a fantastic run seeing us close eight points and 31 goals since Boxing Day.

“It’s been an unreal effort from everyone involved at the club and puts the title in our hands with three to go starting tomorrow against AFC Croydon Athletic.

“I’ve watched them several times and on their day they are a very good side.  Having won their a few weeks back we still know we have a tough game on our hands to get over the line.

“No two games are the same but one thing is certain we’re enjoying the size of the game, the pressure and everything that goes with winning leagues as we have done for several weeks as we try to gain promotion.”

AFC Croydon Athletic go into the game on a five game winless run and sitting in tenth-place in their debut season in this league.

Rams manager Antony Williams said: “We go into tomorrow’s game against the league leaders knowing that a win for them will secure them the title and promotion to the Ryman League.

“Of course, we would love to spoil that party and keep it interesting for another week.

“That being said, Greenwich were the best side we have played this season and really tore us apart when they comfortably beat us 6-0 a few weeks back.

“We have started to make plans for next year already and have started to take a good look at the under 18 lads and tomorrow will be no different with three or four lads involved again.

“Our last game on Bank Holiday Monday against Corinthian we travelled down with 13 players missing. We blooded plenty of youth and also had a bench of myself and my two assistants.

“To get back to 3-2 and then lose after a silly sending off was very difficult for the lads after the massive efforts they put in second half.

“Our final three games we play Greenwich, Erith Town and then Lordswood so a difficult run in.  We will be hoping to pick up a win from that and hope that secures a top ten finish, which isn’t a bad return in our first season, but we probably feel we could have done slightly better and will be hoping to build on that next season.

“We have a very long list on the injured table, this only gives the rest of the squad and youth an opportunity to stake a claim for next year.”
