We've got to pick the players' up, says Glebe boss Ben Young

GLEBE manager Ben Young says he has to pick up his players after their six-match FA Cup run came to a cruel climax on Tuesday night.

They were knocked out 5-4 on penalties at Bostik South side Phoenix Sports after the two sides were locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes of football in Barnehurst.

Phoenix Sports boss Steve O’Boyle admitted afterwards that his side were “very poor” over the two games.  They threw away a 2-0 lead on Saturday as Glebe came storming back to earn a second bite of the cherry and the Chislehurst based side were the better side during the replay, missing some glorious chances to win the game.

However, attention now turns to their bread and butter of the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division, where they have slipped down into the bottom three with four points from five games.

They have four games in hand on leaders Lordswood, who reached the summit after beating Hollands & Blair 3-1 at home last night. Richard Styles’ men have bagged 16 points.

Young takes his side to Bearsted on Saturday, a side that are in eleventh-place in the table with 10 points from eight league games.

“Bearsted’s last two games, they have pushed on and got some very good results, that’s something that we need to do now and turn our attentions to Saturday,” said the former Sutton Athletic boss.

“We’ve got to pick the players’ up and push them forward. If we can play like that over the next two games, we’ll have no problems in the league.

“Of course, playing catch up is what happens in the Cup because you get distracted, you miss games and you get behind.  I look at my players and trust them and if they play like that and have the same belief they’re shouldn’t be no problems.”

Glebe banked £6,425 in prize money from their FA Cup run and some of that cash has enabled Young to sign Jesse Darko and Max Fitzgerald from Bostik South club’s Greenwich Borough and Walton Casuals respectively.
