Goldberg: We've got a really good chance of getting promoted this year
Saturday 24th October 2009
BROMLEY manager Mark Goldberg says he is gunning for promotion into the Blue Square Premier - having knocked struggling Ebbsfleet United out of the FA Cup today, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Hayes Lane outfit will be ball number 70 in tomorrow’s LIVE televised draw on ITV1 at 1 o’clock - following their convincing 3-0 win over a poor Ebbsfleet United side that have now only scored 8 goals in 18 games.
Goldberg, who had re-signed Jacob Erskine from Gillingham, was full of praise for the target man for his display, as his early goal - and Warren McBean’s brace - sent Bromley through to the first round.
“I’m really pleased that we’re in the hat for the next round and also delighted with the performance,” Goldberg told BBC Radio Kent afterwards.
“To beat Ebbsfleet, although they are sitting quite low in the league where we want to be next year, you’ve still got to go and do the job.
“We’ve got another clean sheet and three good goals and in a way it didn’t flatter us, the 3-0 win, did it?”
The Bromley boss added, “We had opportunities to probably score two or three more I think. It was a great performance, a great win and we haven’t conceded a goal in the FA Cup so far so that’s quite encouraging as well.”
Having inflicted full-time Woking’s first away defeat of the season last weekend, Goldberg admitted he was confident of continuing their impressive form of late against an Ebbsfleet United side that are destined for relegation if they don’t improve.
“I believed that we could win,” admitted Goldberg. “Our preparations has been excellent. Our last two performances have been really good.
“We’ve been building up to peaking on good form and the balance of the side is good. I think a big difference for us is we lost Jacob Erskine, who is our main target man, towards the end of pre-season, where he got scouted by Gillingham.
“We prepared all pre-season with Jacob as our target man and we really never replaced him. The timing of getting him back on loan has been perfect and it’s almost we’ve settled back into the form we showed in pre-season.
“I Just hope we take this into the league game on Tuesday against Basingstoke.”
Basingstoke inflicted Dover Athletic’s first home defeat of the season last Tuesday and it should be a good game at Hayes Lane on Tuesday, and one that Bromley will be confident of winning.
“I don’t think we have peaked yet this season,” said Goldberg. “Right now we’re probably just coming to a good run of form and I’ve always believed if we got our right players available to us and we work to a certain pattern of play, it’s a big thing to have the right target man, especially with the way we like to play our football.
“I think if we can keep Jacob we can go on a nice run and we have to make sure if he does go back to Gillingham, obviously he will do, that we are able to replace him with the right target man and if we can we’ve got a really good chance of getting promoted this year.”
