Greenwich Borough Gary Alexander: There is no better way to bounce back than playing one of the favourites for promotion and testing ourselves once again against quality opposition

Friday 03rd February 2017

GREENWICH BOROUGH boss Gary Alexander says he is relishing tomorrow’s test against Marc White’s Dorking Wanderers.

The two sides met on the opening day of the season and Greenwich Borough, who were making their Ryman League debut, squandered chance-after-chance in a 1-0 defeat at Dorking Wanderers’ picturesque ground in Surrey.

Since then both clubs are, as expected, making a serious challenge for promotion.

Tooting & Mitcham United lead the Ryman League Division One South table with 68 points from 31 games, courtesy of their 1-0 home win over Greenwich Borough last weekend.

Dorking Wanderers are in second place with 64 points from their 30 league games, followed by Greenwich Borough (59 points from 31 games); while Carshalton Athletic (58 points from 32 games) and Hythe Town (58 points from 31 games) make up the play-off pack.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s mouth-watering clash at the DGS Marine Stadium in Eltham, Alexander said: “Another big game against one of the best teams in the league.

“Marc has done a great job, unlucky last year not to go up and challenging again this year.

“It’s set to be a good game if anything like the first day of the season.

“They have real talent in their squad. We’re looking forward to it.  The boys are ready after last week’s disappointment.”

Reflecting on their tenth league defeat of the season, at Imperial Fields last weekend, Alexander said: “Any one at the game would have seen we should have been out of sight before gifting a goal to Tooting but that’s football and credit to them.

“There is no better way to bounce back than playing one of the favourites for promotion and testing ourselves once again against quality opposition.”

Meanwhile, Greenwich Borough are searching for a new manager for their under 21 side.

Alexander’s men will try again to play Hanwell Town in the London Senior Cup (Sponsored by Coventry Scaffolding) Second Round next Tuesday, 7 February (7:45pm).

The club have reduced admission prices for Hanwell’s second visit to Eltham after the first one proved to be an internet sensation with highlights showing only the kick-off, the referee blowing the final whistle, both teams walking off the pitch after Alexander shook hands with his Hanwell counterparts.

A Greenwich Borough statement said: “Our game against Hanwell Town fell foul to the cold weather after just 15 minutes play on 24th January but the highlights package from the game has become by far the most watched item on our You Tube Channel with over 100,000 views to date.

“We will welcome The Geordies back to The DGS Marine Marine Stadium next Tuesday night and hopefully will be seeing a bit more of both sides, weather permitting.”

There is expected to be more goal-mouth action when last season’s league runners-up Dorking Wanderers visit tomorrow.
