Just like to say with a broken heart I’ve resigned from my position at Greenwich Borough, says Gary Alexander

GREENWICH BOROUGH begin the search for a new manager after the shock news that Gary Alexander has resigned tonight.

The club are in fourth-place in the Bostik South table with 14 wins, 10 draws and four defeats in the league this season and travel to Hastings United on Saturday, only five points behind leaders Lewes.

Alexander announced his resignation via a brief statement on his Twitter account.

“Just like to say with a broken heart I’ve resigned from my position at Greenwich Borough,” he wrote.

“I’d like to thank my players and staff for all their efforts over my two year stint. It’s been class with what we have had.  Thanks again and good luck to you all, follow your dreams.”

The former Millwall ace guided Greenwich Borough towards the Southern Counties East Football League title just four months after taking over from Ian Jenkins in December 2015.

He led the club to a third-place finish in their debut Isthmian League Division One South campaign last season, losing 4-2 to Corinthian-Casuals in the play-off semi-final.

This season the club are fighting it out to win promotion but Alexander revealed after their goal-less home draw against second-placed Cray Wanderers on New Years Day that there was no budget to bring in new players.

“You have to adapt and overcome sometimes.  I haven’t got nothing to bring in players.  People seem to think we’ve got this massive bubble and massive budget, which isn’t there!  We’re moving along.  I’m not looking to bring anyone in.  I can’t bring anyone in. We’ll go with the squad we’ve got and see where it takes us in 18 games.”

Alexander's number two, John Mackie, and physio Huseyin Torgut have also left the club.

Alexander revealed that he hasn't got another job lined up just yet, tweeting that he is "awaiting my next opportunity in football."

Greenwich Borough won 62, drew 18 and lost 23 of Alexander's 103 games in charge of the club.
