Whilst there are enough points on the board we won’t stop believing, says Greenwich Borough boss Gary Alexander

GREENWICH BOROUGH manager Gary Alexander says he isn’t giving up on winning the Ryman League Division One South title at the first attempt.

Last season’s Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division champions have been fighting for promotion all season and find themselves sitting in fourth-place in the table with 63 points from their 33 league games.

Tooting & Mitcham United occupy the sole promotion place with 77 points from their 34 league games and they travel to Cray Wanderers on  Wednesday night.

Dorking Wanderers remain in second-place (74 points from 34 games) followed by Carshalton Athletic (67 points from 35 games), Greenwich Borough and surprise-package Corinthian-Casuals (63 points from 34 games).

Greenwich Borough defeated bogey-side Walton Casuals 2-1 at the weekend to re-join the push for promotion.

“It was a big win at the weekend, one I think again we deserved and got a break towards the end of the game to take the three points,” said Alexander.

“Walton Casuals have been a bit of a bogey side to us this season so it was nice to get a win, third time lucky.  They are a tricky side as we all have seen with their results which have been quite up and down over recent months so it’s very pleasing moving forward.”

Greenwich Borough lock horns with Hythe Town on Tuesday night, a side that have slipped down to sixth-place in the table (62 points from 33 games), following their 1-1 draw at home to Three Bridges at the weekend.

“Hythe are up there challenging for a reason as they have good personnel within the squad and have been looking to strengthen with a seven-day approach for Jake Britnell, which he turned down,” revealed Alexander.

“I expect a very tough game with both trying to stabilise our promotion push.  We still have 13 games to play so anything can happen,” added Alexander.

“The top two are in decent form and are clearly favourites to grab the top spot but whilst there are enough points on the board we won’t stop believing. Anything can happen, it’s a funny old game so we’re looking forward to another big game.”

Regarding Hythe Town’s approach for Britnell, club secretary Martin Giles said: “Not only the approach was made in the first week of January but also it was done because the player in question approached us.  As regards to turning us down this was not the case because after approaching us he then would not take any calls and so no offer was made to him and that was the end of it. Strange that they should make mention of this today!”
