Greenwich Borough suspend player over shocking referee attack

Monday 22nd December 2008

GREENWICH BOROUGH have confirmed tonight that they’ve suspended one of their players after he allegedly assaulted the match official towards the end of Saturday’s abandoned home game against Erith Town, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Kent League match at Greenwich Borough’s modest Harrow Meadow ground at Eltham Green Road, Eltham, was abandoned after 93 minutes, after a Greenwich Borough player assaulted referee Mr Harry Hill.

The shocking incident happened when Erith Town were awarded a 93rd minute penalty - with the score at 3-3 - and a Greenwich Borough player was sent off before the spot kick could be taken and Mr Hill abandoned the game due to the safety of himself and his assistants.

Steve Firkins, who doubles up as Greenwich Borough’s joint-first team manager and club secretary, declined to name the player involved in the alleged incident.

“At this moment we are not prepared to make any statements until we have seen the referee’s report,” Mr Firkins told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“There are several people that we want to speak to who were close to where the incident took place and get their views.

“Obviously we do not condone the actions of the player involved and he has been suspended forthwith from Greenwich Borough Football Club.”

A statement issued by Erith Town, added: “The club can confirm that the referee has stated that Erith Town are in no way responsible for the game being abandoned.”
