Monday 28th June 2010
GRAVESEND based side Guru Nanak have today unveiled Dennis Hughes as their new manager, writes Stephen McCartney.
Kent’s largest multi-ethnic football club, who are proud to be “United by One Religion - Football” suffered relegation last season after finishing second from bottom of the Vandanel Kent County League Division One West.
Hughes, formerly of Staplehurst & Monarchs, wants to guide Guru out of Division Two East at the first attempt.
“I am delighted to be back and will do all I can to get the club promoted back to the first division at the earliest opportunity,” Hughes told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
“I was surprised in the facilities and the eagerness from the board and they know where they want to be.”
Guru Nanak play at the AEI Sports Club, Dunkirk Close, Gravesend, and were formed in 1965 by a bunch of Indian boys that were kicking around a ball in the local parks as part of unorganised football.
The club soon entered the Gravesend League and in 1997 joined the Kent County League.
Club spokesman, Jess Gill, insists the club is open to everybody.
He said: “We offer the opportunity to all kids to play for us regardless of race, nationality or faith.”
Mr Gill hopes Hughes’ arrival will improve matters on the pitch next season, after the club won only four and drew a couple of their 22 league games last term.

“Players didn’t train and when they did, not enough trained or not nearly as hard enough,” he added.
