Herne Bay boss Sam Denly begins search for new under 21 manager

HERNE BAY manager Sam Denly begins the search for a new under 21 manager after Allan Birchard decided to stand down after six years at the club as a result of work commitments.

Birchard guided the club to the NRG Gyms Under 21 Development League East Division runners-up in their inaugural season in 2013-14, missing out on the title by a single point and a year later they claimed the title with a 100% record.

However, the team went on to the Championship play-off Final, losing to West Division champions Cray Wanderers at Sevenoaks Town’s Greatness Park.

Birchard told the club’s website: “After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to step down as the under 21 manager.

“I would like to thank everyone at the club for your support and help over the last six seasons, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I truly have a soft spot in my heart for the club and always will.

“I have spoken with Sam (Denly) at great length and wish the team every success in the future and under Sam's guidance I believe the club has a bright future.

“I have enjoyed my time at the club and there are lots of good people who help make the club unique.

“I have had a few offers from other clubs which I have turned down. The main reason I have decided to step down is work and health issues. 

“I also feel that I cannot offer the level of commitment that the team and club would require and I would not want to let the club and management team down during the season.”

Denly, meanwhile, has spoken of his gratitude for Birchard’s commitment and respect for his achievements at Winch’s Field.

He said: "Firstly I would like to thank Alan for all his help and support in my time at Herne Bay Football Club.

"Allan has done a lot for this football club and I’m personally sad to see him leave but fully understand his reasons.

“I would like to think I will work with Allan again in the future as would every other member of Herne Bay Football Club. He leaves the club in a better place than when he first joined and that’s due to the hard work, professional and tireless amount of hours he has put in.”

Meanwhile, the Ryman League Division One South club have confirmed that they’ll be spending just over £5,000 on their pitch this summer.
