HEAD TO HEAD: There's going to be more twists and turns, says Hythe Town boss Scott Porter
Herne Bay failed to score for the first time this season, when they were held to a goal-less draw by Hythe Town on Wednesday night – a result that keeps Halsey’s men five points behind Scott Porter’s side with only five league games left to play.
Herne Bay welcome Sporting Bengal United to Winch’s Field tomorrow and Beckenham Town seven days later, before travelling to basement side Fisher (23 April), playing their last home game, against Holmesdale on Easter Monday, before ending their league campaign at VCD Athletic on 30 April.
Hythe Town, meanwhile, lock horns with Holmesdale, Sevenoaks Town, Norton Sports, Beckenham Town and Tunbridge Wells.
When asked whether he wants those sides to do him a favour, Halsey replied, “Not do me a favour, their in to win games so they’ll have to do themselves favours first and foremost by trying to win those games for their club.
“If they do that then it will aid me but I can assure you none of them will be going out there saying they want to win a game for Herne Bay. They want to go out there and win the game first and foremost for their own club.”
Halsey was a calming influence during the top-of-the-table clash, although Hythe’s bench were very animated towards the end of Wednesday night’s game, when decisions from the match officials’ went against them.
When asked whether he was feeling the pressure, Halsey replied, “No pressure. Pressure is if you aint got a job and you’ve got a mortgage to pay, or you’re in a relegation fight or a good friend of yours is pretty ill – like mine is – that’s pressure!
“That’s (looking out to the Winch’s Field pitch) enjoyment. That’s what we train for twice a week for and turn up Saturday’s. That aint pressure.”
Hythe extended their unbeaten run to twenty against Herne Bay, who extended theirs to thirteen.
“Unfortunately when I look back, whatever happens, we must really look at the draw column, and it may be too many draws,” admitted Halsey, who’s side have drawn eight of their 25 league games this season.
“I’m happy with the way we’ve played this season. We’ve had some exciting games, some great games. We’ve dug out results when we haven’t played well. I’m just pleased with the way the season’s gone. We’ve got a Cup Final to look forward to. What will be, will be.”
Scott Porter, meanwhile, wants his table-topping side to pick up another three points against Holmesdale, who visit Reachfields Stadium tomorrow.
“There all tough. It doesn’t matter where you are in the League. That’s why this League is so hard to get out off,” said the Hythe boss.
“They won’t come to us and lie down against us. We’re top of the league. We’re there to be shot at.
“We’ve just got to stay professional and keep taking each game as it comes and that’s exactly what we’ll do.”
Both managers were asked how the Kent League title will be won – or lost.
Porter replied, “Who knows? Like I say, there’s going to be lots of twists and turns I’m sure because it’s a difficult League to get out of because every team can beat each other. We’ve got five massive games left.”
He added: “There’s five big games. They’ve got give big games, so have we, so we’ll just keep on going.”
Halsey added: “I aint got a clue! I really aint got a clue! I haven’t got an answer to that. As I say, what will be, will be.”
