Herne Bay break the bank to re-sign King

Monday 28th July 2008

STUART KING will provide the firepower that will shoot Herne Bay to the Kent League title this season, writes Stephen McCartney.

That is what chairman John Bathurst is saying tonight, after breaking the club’s transfer record to bring the striker back to Winch’s Field after time away at Whitstable Town and Ramsgate.

Mr Bathurst, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk didn’t want to reveal how much he has paid Ryman Premier League club Ramsgate for the striker, but it breaks the previous record of £750 that Bay paid Ashford Town for Dave Arter all those years ago.

“The fee paid will remain undisclosed for a number of years,” said Mr Bathurst, who has tied the striker to a contract.

“The signing of King, a former Herne Bay youth player and Golden Boot winner, shows Bay’s commitment of gaining promotion.

“Manager Barry Morgan has put together a very exciting number of players and the addition of King will only strengthen an already strong squad.

“It is hoped that another high profile signing will be made this week, which will complete the Bay line up for the season.”

New signings Darren Marsden, Rob Goodger, Will Dunlop, Lewis Taylor, Simon Moore and the return of another former Herne Bay youth player, Danny Lawrence has transformed the team.

“Lawrence, in particular, has been awesome in the pre-season friendlies so far,” beamed the Bay chairman.

Many in Kent believe Herne Bay should be playing Ryman League football and are underachieving in the Kent League.

And Mr Bathurst agrees, insisting: “Herne Bay will be there at the end of the season and hopefully will be in a position to achieve promotion.

“It looks like it is going to be a very exciting season with some great football being played on the new surface at Winch’s Field, which is the best it has ever been.

“Praise has been heaped on the club by all the players, home and visitors, on the condition of the new playing surface.”

Herne Bay kick off their Kent League campaign with a home game against perennial whipping boys, Sporting Bengal United on Saturday, 9th August (3pm).
