Herne Bay search for experienced groundsman
Sunday 05th August 2007
Kent League club Herne Bay are searching for a groundsman to look after the playing surface at their ground at Winch’s Field, writes Stephen McCartney.
Tony Day has taken on the important role as groundsman at the club in Stanley Gardens, after his brother, Ian, stood down for “personal reasons,”.But he feels that someone whose better equipped should make themselves known to the north Kent coastal club.
“The renovation of the pitch after last season has not been as successful as we would all have hoped,” said Mr Day on his website notes at www.hernebayfc.net
“There are patches all over the place where the grass has not grown and the whole thing resembles a minor battlefield.
“I never professed to know anything about sports grown management and took on the job just to keep the grass down.
“Needless to say the pitch renovation work was beyond my abilities and someone was brought in to do that.”
Mr Day has issued a plea to groundsmen in the area to make themselves known to the club, so that he can continue his role in updating the club’s website and taking photographs.
He said: “My reason for writing this is to make a plea. My contribution to the club should start and finish with editing the (club) website and taking some photos (but) now the club needs someone to look after the pitch.
“Someone who has skill and experience is unlikely to appear just like that, but anyone who enjoys gardening should be able to make a decent fist of it.
“Whoever takes this on will not be expected to miraculously produce a Wembley type pitch before the season starts.
“We have what we have and we must make the best of it. What the volunteer will get is the undying gratitude o all of us who have Herne Bay Football Club at heart.”
The club are looking for someone who can give two or three hours a week to the job, and if you’re interested, please email the club at football@hernebayfc.net.
