Hero McPhee humbled by Fleet return

Tuesday 09th December 2008

EBBSFLEET UNITED’S FA Trophy hero Chris McPhee has said he was amazed by the reception he got on his return to Stonebridge Road with new club Weymouth.

McPhee scored the winner for the Fleet at Wembley last season before leaving the Kent club for family reasons.

After the Fleet's 1-0 win on Saturday, he told BBC Radio Kent: "It was very weird walking out in familiar territory but the fans were excellent.

"I did walk away from here with huge disappointment, I didn't want to go."

The midfielder added: "It was nothing to do with football, it was nothing to do with money, it was just a life decision and I wanted to start my married life and see as much of my family as possible.

"I love the club and the season was fantastic.

"I've kept an eye on their results, they've had a few disappointing results but they've shown what they're capable of and I wish them the very best.

"Luckily I've gone to a club where they've accepted me straight away, I've fitted in and it feels just the same and I'm really enjoying my football."

McPhee said winning the FA Trophy had been a surreal experience and something he struggled to take in.

"I was one of those people who just got changed, got in the shower and I just couldn't soak it all up," he added.

"It's an afternoon where I just didn't know what was really happening. It went by so quickly and I just wish I'd taken it in a bit more and celebrated a bit more with the boys."
