I'll be very, very surprised if there's a better team in the league than Greenwich Borough, says Holmesdale assistant Ross Mitchell
HOLMESDALE assistant manager Ross Mitchell says his side will not be involved in an 11-goal thriller again on Saturday.
The Bromley based club found themselves 7-1 down to title-favourites Greenwich Borough at Oakley Road with 11 minutes remaining last night, before restoring some pride before losing 7-4.
Holmesdale welcome Mile Oak on Saturday in The FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, with £1,500 up for grabs for the winners.
Mile Oak kicked off their Sussex County League Division One (Step Six) campaign by winning 3-2 at home to Selsey last night, courtesy of goals from Danny Curd, Adam Dine and Asa Turley-George.
Holmesdale are favourites to progress through to the next round because Mile Oak play one level lower than John Wilfort’s side.
Who knows what Mile Oak’s scout would have thought of last night’s game?
“I would say there’s not going to be a repeat performance of that and they won’t have the ability that Greenwich Borough had tonight,” Mitchell said after last night’s whirlwind football match.
“It will be easy for a poor scout to go ‘there’s goals in it’ – the reality of it is we’re not going to defend like that every week and we’ll make sure we’ll address that!
“I think they’ll be more worried about our attacking threat and what could be on the receiving end of that, so I don’t think you can read too much into that game.
“It’s our first game, it’s out the system now and we go into Saturday.”
Mitchell would, however, settle for a 1-0 win over Mile Oak in The FA Cup on Saturday.
“A win! I don’t care how we get it,” he said.
“I just want the boys to play to a system that we’ve asked them to play and Wilfs (Wilfort) has drilled into them.
“A win’s a win at the end of the day. I don’t think you can read too much into a performance in a Cup games It’s nice to have that atmosphere that goes with a Cup but let’s go through that round and analyse it after.”
Greenwich Borough put on an impressive performance at Holmesdale last night and have set the tone of their aspirations this season after disappointing in the league last season and becoming cup specialists instead
Mitchell said: “Unbelievable! I think they are the league champions, yes! I’ll be very, very surprised if there’s a better team in the league than them!
“I thought they conducted themselves really well. I thought they showed quality in the right areas and yes let’s face it if they don’t win the league that’s going to be very disappointing for a team like that and if anybody beats them, they’re worthy champions.”
