Holmesdale coach Ross Mitchell looks for a better solid campaign

HOLMESDALE goalkeeper coach Ross Mitchell says the club want to get their new Safety Net Associates Kent League campaign off to a flying start at the weekend, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Dalers finished their 30-match campaign in tenth place last season, but they grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons when their entire squad walked out before a home game against Deal Town last November.

Media-shy Gary Davies immediately took over and re-built the squad from scratch by utilising his contacts in the Kent League and Mitchell hopes the club can go into Saturday’s home game with Erith Town on a more stable footing.

“We obviously went through a sticky patch last year and we’re looking to build on and make this a good club, not just for the players, for the first team and the second team and for everyone,” Mitchell, who also doubles up as the club secretary, told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

Mitchell was pleased with his side’s fitness, despite losing 3-0 to a strong Blue Square Bet South side Welling United at Oakley Road last night.

The Wings ended the game with more or less their first team squad, and the Dalers were only 1-0 down with 15 minutes left.

But the real stuff gets underway on Saturday, when Steve O’Boyle brings his Erith Town side to Oakley Road.

“It’s for real, it’s been a long time coming,” said Mitchell.  “We’ve had a really good pre-season, the boys have worked really hard and we’re really looking forward to Saturday’s game.

“We want to put on a good performance for everyone at the club.

“We’ve had a hard pre-season, everyone’s put a lot of time in, Gary, all the coaches, myself, everyone behind the scenes and we’re now ready to go.”
