Holmesdale will not come to Herne Bay and lie down, warns Simon Halsey
Sunday 24th April 2011
HERNE BAY boss Simon Halsey says Holmesdale will not lie down against his side at Winch’s Field on Easter Monday, writes Stephen McCartney.Herne Bay took full advantage of league leaders Hythe Town’s 3-1 defeat at Norton Sports on Good Friday and closed the gap to just two points following their convincing 3-0 win at Fisher the following day.
Hythe Town welcome a Beckenham Town side that completed their home campaign with a 6-0 win over Corinthian to end their run of four straight defeats and Halsey hopes Jason Huntley’s unpredictable side claim three points at Reachfields Stadium to enable his Herne Bay side to snatch top spot with a win over Gary Davies’ Dalers.
”People are saying Norton done us a favour, these club’s ain’t going out to win the games for Herne Bay Football Club,” said Halsey.
”Ben Taylor and Norton Sports went into that game on Good Friday to win the game for Norton Sports.
”Now, we’ve got a bit of luck on the back of that, there’s nothing I can do about that, but Ben hasn’t gone out there to win the game for Herne Bay, believe you me. They’ve gone out to make sure Norton Sports get three points and finish as high in the table that they possibly can and we’ve had a bit of the rub of the green off it – and I’ll take it.”
Herne Bay welcome Holmesdale to Winch’s Field on Easter Monday, before completing their campaign at third-placed VCD Athletic on Saturday.
Hythe Town, meanwhile, welcome Beckenham Town, before travelling to Tunbridge Wells, in what could go down to a dramatic final day of the season, similar to 2006 when Maidstone United snatched the title away from Beckenham Town in an exciting climax.
Beckenham were held to a draw at Erith & Belvedere, but the Stones clinched promotion into the Ryman League with a comfortable 4-0 win at Sevenoaks Town.
Looking ahead to the last week of this season, Halsey said, “It’s easy for those clubs to say we can have a good say in who wins the league here.
”Fisher weren’t going to lie down, that’s why I’ve asked the lads now to be professional and make sure we’re ready for Holmesdale on Monday because they’re a good footballing side, they pass the ball round well and they aint going to come to Herne Bay and lie down.
”We have to be on our game, just be relentless and go at them and we’ll do whatever we can to take it to the last game.”
Looking ahead to Saturday’s trip to Oakwood, Halsey said, “I started my coaching and managerial career as a number 2 at VCD so I just hope we go through to next Saturday and see whatever happens there.
”That’s where I started so I’m glad to be going back there at the end of the season. It’s a great club with great people there.”
