Hopefully we can be in Faversham's position next year, says Beckenham chairman

BECKENHAM TOWN chairman Chris McCarthy says he wants to finish as runners-up this season and go one better next year, writes Stephen McCartney.

Jason Huntley’s side went to champions-elect Faversham Town on Good Friday and goals from James Holder and Gary Gorman sealed a 2-1 win at Salters Lane.

That win keeps the Eden Park Avenue outfit in third place in the Bulmers Cider Kent League table - 12 points behind Faversham and only three behind Herne Bay.

“Yes, we want to finish second,” Mr McCarthy told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.  “We can’t catch Faversham now.  We’ve got five games left, two at home, three away, and Faversham would have to stumble big time if we were to catch them.

“We’ve got Hythe on Monday away, then Greenwich Borough away, so they’ll be two tough games, but it’s in our hands now because Herne Bay have to come to us last game of the season, so if we keep winning we can finish second, and if Faversham slip, who knows.”

Beckenham’s Eden Park Avenue ground doesn’t meet criteria for the league above, but plans are a foot to install a new stand at the ground, which will assist the club in their bid to reach the Ryman League.

When asked about promotion this year, the chairman replied, “I haven’t even contemplated that.  We’ve had our own financial problems over the last couple of years but we’ve got it stable now.

“But the most important thing now is to drastically improve on last year, when we finished third from bottom, and this year, hopefully finish in the top three,.

“We reached the semi-final of a cup, third round of the FA Vase, so we’ve improved no end on and off the field and it’s a stepping stone to the future.”

Huntley and Mr McCarthy will sit down with the current squad to bring in players that could go on and win the Kent League next year.

“We’ve got a good bunch of lads and we’re confident they’ll be with us next year,” added the chairman.

“Jason and I will sit down and see if we can find a couple of new faces to come in, and then we can push on and hopefully be in Faversham’s position next year.”
