Hopefully we can do ourselves justice at Woking, says Welling United player-manager Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day has told his players to do themselves justice in their clash away to league leaders Woking tomorrow. The Wings travel to Kingfield Stadium full of confidence after chalking up three wins on the bounce over Bromley, Weston-super-Mare and Chelmsford City and Day insists the pressure is on Garry Hill’s side going into the game.
Woking have led the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South table all season and go into the game with 75 points from 33 games.
Welling United, meanwhile, travel to Surrey in third-place, with 66 points from 33 games and realistically will have to settle for a play-off place at the end of the season, unless Woking slip up in dramatic fashion.
“I think there’s probably a bit more pressure on Woking than us,” said Day, 32, on the eve of the big-game.
“We go there in good form and hopefully play the football we know we can play and if we do get a result it brings us back into contention of maybe catching them.
“We’re looking forward to it and it’s a good game and hopefully all the players go there and get the win.”
Welling United were the first side to beat Woking in the league this season when goals from Ben Martin and Jack Parkinson (2) secured a 3-2 victory at Park View Road.
Day added: “I mean it’s not going to be easy, they’ve shown they’ve been the most consistent team over the 33 games.
“It’s not an easy task and if we’re not at our best we’re going to get beat so we need to put in a decent performance. I’m confident we can do that.
“It’s going to be a tight game. Maybe that little bit of quality from either team will win it. Hopefully that comes from us.”
Day wants his side to take the form that they showed away to Chelmsford into tomorrow’s game.
He said: “The boys’ done exceptionally well last week and we know the boys’ can’t rest on that. We’ve got to take that form going into tomorrow’s game – hopefully we can.
“If we put the performance like last year or close to it then I’ll be happy.”
Day, who scored the first goal against Chelmsford, admits he hasn’t reached his own personal goalscoring target.
“I probably haven’t scored enough this year,” he admitted. “Hopefully I will get a few more until the end of the season and contribute us in doing what we can to get into the play-offs or to challenge for the title.
“I look to get eight goals a season and that’s the sort of target we aim for. I’m halfway there and running out of games so I’ll probably won’t reach that. If the other boys’ reach their targets then I’ll get away with it!”
Day, meanwhile, takes his side to York Road next Tuesday to face a Maidenhead United side that are still not safe from relegation.
The Berkshire outfit go into tomorrow’s game away to second-from-bottom side Hampton & Richmond Borough sitting in sixteenth-place in the table, only five points clear of the relegation zone.
The Magpies held second-placed Dartford to a 1-1 draw last Tuesday night and Day is expecting a tough game.
“It’s shown last week with Dartford, they played them with ten men second half and only managed to get a point. It’s a difficult game. It’s never easy to go there midweek.
“The teams down the bottom are all fighting for survival in this league, so it won’t be an easy game.
“Hopefully we can take a good result from the weekend there on Tuesday. We know it’s going to be as tough as tomorrow’s game.”
Central defender, Ben Martin and midfielder Joe Healey, meanwhile are suspended for the trip to Woking and Day added: “ Everyone else is available for selection, so we go there with a fairly strong side and hopefully we can do ourselves justice and put a decent performance in.”
