Hopefully we can get one more win to seal title, says Welling United boss Jamie Day
The Wings will return to the top-flight of non-league football for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign if they collect at least a point at Meadow Park.
Day said: “Obviously we need to get the right result first and hopefully we can do that, but it’s a big game, one we’re looking forward to.”
Boreham Wood will not lie down and let Welling United win comfortably, because they go into the game sitting in eighth-place in the table, five points behind fifth-placed Eastleigh, with three league games remaining.
“I think they’re going to be tough,” warned Day. “They’ve still got a chance of getting into the play-offs so I think it will be an attacking game. They need to get three points and we need to defend properly at the same time.
“We’ve scored a good amount of goals in the last couple of games and hopefully we can do that again tomorrow.”
The Wings go into the game sitting eight points clear of full-time Salisbury City with 84 points and Day paid tribute to his champions-elect.
“Very proud of the boys. We’re not there yet but hopefully we can do that,” said Day.
“We’ve got a set of players that have been consistently good over the course of the season. I can probably count the number of bad games on one hand and that’s credit to them. We’ve got so many wins on the board and hopefully we can get one more. Hopefully we can do that in the next two games.”
Day hopes his side can keep their nerve in Hertfordshire tomorrow – in front of a large away following.
“I think there will be a bit of nerves but at the same time it’s one we have to enjoy and look forward to,” said Day.
“We’re not going there to play for a draw and get a point. We’ll play our normal game and go and try and get a result.”
Day revealed he will sit down with the board as soon as their promotion is confirmed to plan for Conference Premier football.
“We’re just starting to talk about plans for next season but until you’re officially up that’s got to be put on hold. Hopefully if we can get the required points then we can talk about how to take the club forward and keep the club in the league above.”
The Wings would have clinched promotion 12 months earlier, but they suffered a 1-0 defeat at Kent rivals Dartford in last season’s Conference South play-off final.
Tony Burman’s Darts exceeded expectations and go into their final league game at home to Nuneaton Town (tomorrow at 5:15pm) sitting in seventh-place in the table – the highest ranked part-time outfit in the division.
Day said: “You look at Dartford as an example, they have done exceptionally well and if I’m totally honest Dartford is a bigger club than Welling in terms of stadium and support and they’ve got a lot more resources than we have.
“We’re under no illusions, it’s going to be tough if we go up. It’s a difficult league and it’s 90% full-time, so I think first of all we have to go up there and we know it’s going to be difficult and we’ll give it a good go, if we do manage to go up.”
Welling United will know that their attendances must increase next season if they are to compete in the league above.
Day praised the club’s current fan base and said: “We’re probably one of the best supported clubs with the same people going week in week out, win, lose or draw. They’re always supporting the boys and the management staff and the club.
“I think that has an effect on the boys’ performances as well. When it’s a tight game or we’re losing that little bit of help they give spurs the boys on.
The Wings welcome full-time outfit Eastleigh to Park View Road on 27 April looking to go the entire 21-game home campaign unbeaten.
“We’ve still got one game (at home) to go so you’d like to go through the whole season unbeaten,” said Day.
“It’s vital next season that our home form’s good. I think at home we’re a lot more attacking and it probably goes in our favour that it’s not the biggest pitch and it probably suits the way we play.”
