I always said there was more to come, says Ashford United boss Paul Chambers
ASHFORD UNITED boss Paul Chambers has hailed his record-breaking team ahead of Saturday’s FA Vase clash at St Francis Rangers.
Chambers watched in delight as Liam Whiting and Mo Takaloo netted goals in a 2-0 win over Hollands & Blair last Saturday, the club’s fifth Kent Invicta League win in a row.
The victory ensured it was the best season start that the club – in either Town or United form – has ever had.
Takaloo’s six goals in six games is also a club record, as is Joe Mant’s four league clean-sheets.
Chambers told www.ashfordunited.co.uk: “It’s nice to hear we’re setting records but we’re not getting carried away.
“We’ll keep taking each game as it comes and although a Vase run would be nice, we’re only looking at Saturday.
“I always said there was more to come and I think I was proved right against Hollands & Blair.
“We were unplayable in the second half and I think that’s the best we’ve played this year. A lot of players have only joined this season and they’re still trying to blend in, which is exciting.
“Not many teams will go there and get a point, let alone come away with all three.
“There’s a big slope on the pitch and they like to use that in the first half, get ahead and that’s how they get results.
“They threatened us a bit but our goalkeeper Joe didn’t have too many saves to make. Saying that, he was absolutely fantastic again.”
Whiting’s goal was a long-range stunner right out the top drawer but Chambers has seen them many times before.
He said: “What a goal, it was unbelievable. He scored one like that against Deal and we know he can do that kind of stuff.
“I felt that turned the game completely.
“Mo got the second and that’s six in six for him. We had to make a choice of leading the line with Mo or Stuart Zanone and I made my decision and now it’s proof that maybe I do know what I’m doing!
“Stuart wanted to be the out and out forward and he didn’t want to play behind someone but I thought that Mo would be more effective.”
A win on Saturday will put Ashford United into the first round proper of the FA Vase, as well as netting them £700 in prize money.
Ashford face Woodstock Park at Homelands – providing Saturday’s game isn’t a draw – in league action on Tuesday night.
Roy Guiver (knee) and Matt Hadlum (side) both look likely to sit out both games through injury.
Chambers said: “I hoped Roy would have been fit but it looks like he’ll be out for a couple of weeks now.
“The squad is strong enough that we can cope with it, though, which is a nice place to be.”
