I am very close now to completing the squad, says Faversham Town boss Ray Turner

FAVERSHAM TOWN boss Ray Turner has tonight unveiled the signings of three players who helped local rivals Herne Bay win the Kent League and reach the FA Carlsberg Vase Semi-Finals last season.

Herne Bay’s preparation for their inaugural Ryman League Division One South campaign were dealt a blow after Turner signed target-man and Herne Bay’s club captain Luke Harvey, exciting right-winger Dan Lawrence and midfielder Jamie Maxted, who have opted to leave Winch’s Field to sign for The Lilywhites.

Turner spoke of his delight in welcoming the trio to Salters Lane.

He said: “I met with Luke after he had left Herne Bay recently and he will add a great deal to our squad, not just his experience, work-rate and commitment to the team on the pitch, he will add real character to the dressing room.

“Danny is an exciting talent. He can hurt teams in that crucial final third and will add that creativity I was looking for.

“Jamie is a really strong player. He can combine that physical presence with a great distribution from that left hand side.”

Turner added:  “I am very close now to completing the squad. It is looking balanced and provides plenty of options.”

Faversham Town reported back for pre-season training earlier today and Turner said: “It was great to have our first session today. In attendance were 25 players all striving to make the squad.”

Turner’s management team has also been finalised.

Nick Rogers will now take up the goalkeeping coach role.  Much-travelled striker Danny Hockton stays at the club as player-coach and Gary Metcalf carries on as physio.

Turner said:  “Nick Rogers is UEFA B qualified and has great experience coaching in this country and the States. He will also work on match analysis.

“Danny Hockton will take up his role as player-coach, bringing huge experience of a fantastic non-league career as well as his professional playing experience. He will make the transition into coaching whilst providing a great option on the pitch.

“Clive Walker will continue in his role as assistant manager and coach.

“Gary Metcalf will carry on as head physio and provide his vast experience with his team to the benefit of all the playing staff.”

Faversham Town open their pre-season campaign when Welling United visit Salters Lane on Saturday 21 July, 3pm.

Jamie Day’s side finished in third-place in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South last season, but they were denied promotion into the top flight of non-league football after losing the play-off final 1-0 away to their Kent rivals Dartford.
