I don't expect an easy opener at Fisher, warns Firkins
Monday 02nd August 2010
GREENWICH BOROUGH boss Steve Firkins says his side will relish opening their new Kent League campaign on the vastly-improved Champion Hill pitch, writes Stephen McCartney.
Borough kick-off their season with a trip to play Fisher at Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday and Firkins is looking forward to the local derby, where two cash-strapped amateur sides lock horns.
“Well, for me, the opening day, everybody’s on a level pegging aren’t they,” Firkins told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
“We all start off with no points and at the end of the day whoever starts off and get their noses in front sort of thing, but I expect a hard game against Fisher.”
Firkins admitted he has plenty of respect for his opposite number, Gary Lisney.
He said: “I know Gary has been working hard through the back end off last season. They’ve finished very, very strong towards the end of the season if I recall so I don’t expect an easy game from them.
“I think we’re going to have our work cut out. We had two good results against them last year. I would’ve thought that’s good motivation for them.
“For us to go to their ground, the one good bonus playing at Dulwich early, the first game of the season, the pitch will be lovely, so we are looking forward to that.”
