I don't know where my future lies - Guest
Sunday 25th October 2009
DEFENDER John Guest says he is unsure of his Dartford future, having played for his second Kent club on loan today, writes Stephen McCartney.
The 27-year-old hasn’t played for the Darts this season, due to a pre-season injury, and was shipped out to Ryman League Division One South side Ashford Town for nine-games, and made his Cray Wanderers debut today in their thrilling 3-3 home draw with Carshalton Athletic.
Guest, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk says he is on a seven-match loan spell with Ian Jenkins’ side and partnered Mark Willy in the heart of the Wands defence in today’s Ryman Premier League thriller.
Cray Wanderers, who were 2-0 down inside the opening seven minutes, fought back and by the 17th minute they had levelled through Tyrone Sterling, who netted a two minute brace.
A thunderous Jamie Wood gave the Kent side the lead for the first time after 35 minutes, before Carshalton shared the points when striker Craig Faulconbridge finished off a fine move just before the hour.
“It weren’t the best of starts was it?” Guest said afterwards. “But I think we’ve done ever so well to get back into the game and unfortunately they get the equaliser in the second half.”
Poor defending proved costly for Cray Wanderers early on, but to their credit they showed true character to claim a point, despite remaining inside the Ryman Premier League relegation zone and going eight home games without a win.
“The first one was down to me I’d say,” admitted Guest, who added, “But we done ever so well, all the lads. We pitched in and worked hard and they like to play here so it’s great to come out with at least a point and we deserved three.”
Guest spoke about whether he’s got a future at Princes Park, as he is behind Adam Flanagan, Jamie Coyle and John Beales in the central defensive ranks.
“Last year I put on a little bit of weight, I’ve come back and lost the weight,” said Guest, who is now a taxi-driver, having previously worked as a builder.
“I got injured just before the season started and the boys down at Dartford are doing ever so well and haven’t lost a game, so no-one’s going to get back into the side.
“As the future goes, I couldn’t tell you!. Tony (Burman, the Dartford manager) could answer that, not me!”
But he wants to play a part in Dartford’s promotion chasing season.
“You want to play football and you want to play football for the side you signed to play football for,” said Guest.
“Things happen in football and things happen quickly and things turnaround quickly as well.
“I’ve just kept my head down, worked hard, went on loan at Ashford and come back and he (Burman) put me in the reserves against Ashford reserves.”
But Guest, who has played for numerous Kent sides, seems happy to play for Cray Wanderers for seven games to help the club climb out of the relegation zone and up the table.
“Twenty-nine days I think it is, getting a total of seven games,” he said of the length of his loan spell at Hayes Lane.
“Obviously I want to come here and hopefully come away from the 29 days with as least many goals against us as possible - which is what I want to do.
“Unfortunately today it didn’t work out that way, but a point against Carshalton, who have won their last four or five, is a pretty decent point!”
When asked about his loan spell under Steve Lovell at Ashford Town, Guest replied, “I thoroughly enjoyed it down there - they’re a great bunch of lads. Unfortunately it came to a natural end. I would have (stayed) on a long-term loan, but that wasn’t the aim of what we was doing.
“I’ve come here (Cray Wanderers) to do exactly the same, work hard, trying to play the best I can.”
Cray Wanderers next game will be away to Horsham on Saturday, 7th November.
