I don't think the players' cared enough against Worthing, says Faversham Town boss Ray Turner

Monday 19th March 2012
FAVERSHAM TOWN assistant manager Clive Walker says he wants his side to pick up as many wins from all of their remaining home games at Salters Lane.

The Lilywhites finished last season as the highest ranked Kent side in the Ryman League Division One South table, but they haven’t been able to mirror that and are presently in fourteenth place, with 35 points from 32 games.

They suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat at a Worthing side that have now climbed above Folkestone Invicta and Maidstone United into fourth-place in the table.

Faversham Town manager, Ray Turner, told the club’s website www.favershamtownfc.co.uk of his disappointment.

“I don’t think we were competitive enough,” said Turner.  “I don’t think the players cared enough and it simply wasn’t good enough from us.”

Faversham haven’t scored in their last three outings and Turner added: “This goal drought is down to a bit of poor finishing and not creating opportunities.  I’d say recently that we haven’t created the chances or the forwards to go on though.”

Walker, meanwhile, hopes his players’ bounce back with victory over an injury-hit Ramsgate at Salters Lane on Tuesday night.

Jim Ward’s side claimed a 2-1 win away to Crawley Down at the weekend and despite being in eighth-place in the table, a decent run of form in their final seven games, the Thanet outfit could grab a play-off berth at the end of the season.

Walker said: “They’re all hard aren’t they derbies? “We had a decent game at their place but we were unfortunate not to get a result there actually – but we’ll see tomorrow.”

Reflecting on their poor run of form, Walker added: “It’s a concern because obviously we want to score goals and win football matches but sometimes it happens.

“We’ve got a few players out as well.  We’ve got PK (James Peacock) ain’t we, out, suspended and he should probably come back tomorrow but he’s dad died so we don’t’ know about that and Sam Robinson is on a three-match ban. Both are central midfielders.”

Walker admits the chopping and changing of team personnel has seen a downturn on results and the club’s disappointing league position.

“There’s been a lot of players changing here,” explained Walker.  “A lot of players have changed, a lot of players’ gone, new players have come in.

“It takes a while for players to settle. It’s not a bad squad really. We’re just not getting the results.”

Whitehawk visit Salters Lane next Saturday and the Brighton-based club are one of three sides that are challenging for the title.

Bognor Regis Town, Dulwich Hamlet and Whitehawk are only separated by three points and Walker expects a tough time.

“Well, I think you’ve just mentioned there, they’re the three best sides in the league so that will be a tough one as well,” Walker said of Whitehawk.

“I think we’ve got eight games left and five at home, so hopefully we should pick up points in those games.

“Obviously we want to win games now.  We’ve got eight games left. We want to go on a run.  It doesn’t matter who you’re playing, if you’re at home.”

Meanwhile, Faversham Town will be holding trials for next season’s under 13’s Valley Express Kent Youth League squad (present academic year 7’s).

Trials will take place at the club this coming Saturday, 24 March.  Registration will be at 11:00 and the trial begins at 11:30.
