I don't think we're relying on FA Cup money, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says his side must be ready for another battle when they lock horns with Kent rivals Bromley again in the FA Cup next Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The third-placed Wings had to settle for a point as an uninspiring game at Hayes Lane ended in a 1-1 draw yesterday.

Day was pleased that striker Luis Cumbers scored his second goal of the season to give Welling a 63rd minute lead, but Bromley defender Liam Harwood converted with only five minutes remaining.

Day revealed he will speak to Npower League One club AFC Bournemouth tomorrow to see if on-loan goalkeeper Daniel Thomas can face Bromley in the FA Cup tie – if not, John Whitehouse, who is battling back from a knee injury, will be recalled.

“We’ll speak to Bournemouth on Monday,” said Day.  “I think for us to keep him we may have to loan him a little bit longer so we’ll look at that and I’ll speak to John as well and see where we are with him and make a decision before Tuesday or Wednesday.  I don’t want to leave it too late so hopefully he’ll (Thomas) will be involved.”

Day hopes his side will be prepared to roll up their sleeves against Mark Goldberg’s side, especially as Bromley had more possession in the League game yesterday.

“We knew it was going to be a battle.  I think we can play a lot better football wise as we did yesterday, so that’s what we’ll work on in the week, but it’s going to be a tough game.

“I think for the majority of the game (yesterday) we ain’t dominated it but we’ve been in control and they’ve not been a threat.

“We have to get in good areas and take our chances and hopefully we can get a win next Saturday.”

With £5,000 up for grabs for the winner, Day knows the importance of progressing in the FA Cup, but he hopes his playing budget will not be cut if they slip up at the first hurdle.

“Obviously we’re not going to win it (The FA Cup), said Day.

“For us and for the club we want to get through as many rounds as we can, get as much money as we can and help the club out and hopefully we can do that.

“I think at the minute I don’t need to let anyone go.  I think my budget was set at the start of the season and it was cut a little bit so I don’t see why we need to change it if we get knocked out of the FA Cup.  I don’t think we’re relying on that.”
