I don't want to get beat by the same team twice in a season, says Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day admits his side were battered by Hayes & Yeading United when they were defeated 2-1 back in September.



The Wings moved to within a couple of points of full-time leaders Salisbury City following their 3-1 home win over ten-man Bromley on Tuesday night.

The Ravens were reduced to ten men after only eleven minutes when central defender Moses Swaibu was red carded for handball and Joe Healy (whose shot was illegally blocked) stepped up to convert the resulting penalty to give the Wings a thirteenth-minute lead.

Ross Lafayette joined Healy on ten goals for the season when he was put through on goal to double Welling’s lead in the 67^th minute, before Bromley skipper Ali Fuseini scored with a curling 35-yard fluke for his first goal of the season.

Welling United maintained their unbeaten home league record when substitute Theo Fairweather-Johnson slotted home a third inside injury time.

Day, who dropped himself for the Kent derby, says he is looking for a much improved performance against Hayes & Yeading United at Park View Road tomorrow.

He said: “They battered us in the first half at theirs.  They outplayed us, passed us off the park. 

“We need to put in a performance against them. I don’t want to get beat by the same team twice in a season so  hopefully we can put in a good performance on Saturday and keep this run going.”

The Wings have won their last four successive games and Day is proud of that record and wants to keep it going.

Maidenhead United were the last team to beat the Kent side in the league towards the end of October, which saw Day awarded with the manager-of-the-month award for November.

Day said: “We’ve just said in the dressing room, from Maidenhead if we’d have six wins we’d be laughing!

“I’m really pleased. Full credit to the boys.  Like we’ve said before they’ve taken things on board, went to the training ground and worked hard, worked hard as a group of players and as individuals and at the moment they’ve got their rewards for that and we’ve just got to keep that going.

“You look at these games and you have to grind out results and sometimes in the past we have not done that as well as we have done.”

When asked what kind of game he is expecting tomorrow, Day replied, “They’re a good, passing team and they caused us problems.  They are dynamic, very quick up front so it’s going to be a very tough game and we need to be playing at a level we can do if we want to get three points.”

Welling United travel to Blue Square Bet (Conference) Premier side Woking in the FA Carlsberg Trophy Second Round on 15 December.

The Surrey outfit clinched promotion from Blue Square Bet (Conference) South last season as champions and were promoted alongside Dartford, who defeated Welling United 1-0 in the play-off final.

Day said: “I don’t think we’re under any pressure when we go there.  They were the best team in our league last year. I think we need to go there full of confidence and enjoy it and play how we can do and not be afraid of them and if we do that then we’ll give them a good game.”

Day is preparing for a busy month ahead and said: “We’ve got a lot of games this month. It’s a very important month and it’s nice to start off with two wins.

“Wins breed confidence. I’m just hoping we can get some of these (injured) players back fit and involved in the squad because people have played a lot of games up until now and are carrying a few knocks. It will be nice to give players’ a night off and a bit of a rest so hopefully we can get some players back and look forward to the next couple of games coming up.”
