If I'm top with one game to go then I'll be very pleased, says Sittingbourne boss Matt Wyatt
Sunday 10th August 2014
SITTINGBOURNE manager Matt Wyatt says he’s very pleased with his side’s start to the new season. The Brickies came away from Corinthian-Casuals with a comfortable 3-0 victory and are at the summit of the Ryman League Division One South table after 90 minutes of football.
George Crimmen scored Sittingbourne’s first goal of the season and David Abe netted a second half brace.
“Not being disrespectful to Corinthian-Casuals, I thought that we’ve played better in some pre-season games to be perfectly honest with you,” said Wyatt.
“What we were yesterday, I would call it probably a professional job.
“We came down there and we didn’t give them no chances. We created six or seven really good chances and put three away and to be honest we should have won by more but that sounds a bit disrespectful to Corinthian’s but we were very professional.
“We done a good job, a thorough job and to go away to a hard place like Corinthian-Casuals, always hard, lovely pitch, a 3-0 victory is very pleasing.”
There is no better feeling in football than looking at a league table and seeing your team sitting proudly at the top.
Wyatt joked: “That’s why I’m going on holiday for a week now! I said to Barry my assistant if we’re not top when I come back I’m not going to be happy!”
Wyatt added: “No. On a serious note even though it’s one game and you don’t win nothing for the first game, it’s nice for the players’ to look at the league table and seeing yourselves top and gives some people a little bit of confidence.
“Even though there’s 45 games to go, if I’m top with one game to go then I’ll be very pleased.”
Sittingbourne’s next two games are at home. They welcome relegated Carshalton Athletic to Woodstock on Tuesday night and Horsham next Saturday.
The Robbins suffered relegation from the Ryman Premier League at the end of last season and began their campaign with a goal-less draw at home to Herne Bay.
“We’ve had them watched,” revealed Wyatt.
“They’re a very good passing team. They’re quick, powerful and I think Carshalton will be there or there abouts come the end of the season.
“But we need to make sure, like I’ve said to a lot of people in the press, that we’ve got a very young inexperienced squad so on our day we’re quite capable of going to beat anyone, but also as well on the flip side of that we could quite easily come unstuck.
“What we’re trying to get into the heads of the players is they’ve got to have a level performance week-in-week-out and that’s what we’re trying to get into their heads.”
Horsham, meanwhile, opened their campaign with a 2-0 home defeat to newly-promoted South Park.
Wyatt said: “Someone went to watch that game. We’ve got Horsham in the Trophy as well so we just wanted to make sure we know a lot about them.
“Gary Charman, good manager, good player, well-organised. I think a lot of these teams in this league it’s about who gets the first goal.
“They’ve very organised, very powerful, play good football, very compact, work hard.
“We’re expecting two tough games but the way that we’ve started there’s no reason, hopefully, fingers crossed we can’t be sitting here with nine points on Saturday afternoon.”
