If we stay up in our first season it will be a fantastic achievement, says Welling boss Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED manager Jamie Day says the Kent club must invest in fresh blood next month if they are to retain their Skrill Premier status at the end of the season. The Wings go into Saturday’s clash against Welsh giants Wrexham sitting in thirteenth-place in the Conference Premier with 30 points from 21 games.
Day’s side are seven points adrift of fifth-placed Grimsby Town and 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
The club banked £30,500 in prize money from The Football Association after beating Brislington and Luton Town in The FA Cup this season, before going out 3-1 at League Two side Plymouth Argyle in the Second Round.
Wrexham arrive at Park View Road sitting two places below Welling United with 28 points from their 21 league outings.
“Wrexham will be a tough game for us and we will need to be at our best to get a result. We have had some good performances of late but need to get some points to show for it, said Day, 34.
The Wings make the short trip to play their Kent rivals Dartford on Boxing Day, Thursday 26 December (12:30pm).
The Darts finished as the highest ranked part-time club in the division last season when Tony Burman’s side finished a brilliant eighth-place, but they have struggled this term and are presently sitting in the bottom two with 18 points from 24 games.
Welling United then travel to fourth-from-bottom side Aldershot Town on 28 December, before welcoming Dartford to Park View Road on New Years’ Day (3pm).
“We’ll be looking forward to the Christmas period with some good games and ones we need to pick some points up from,” said Day.
“If we can come through with a good amount of points then hopefully we can retain league status for another year and try and push on.”
Day said he is satisfied with the club’s campaign so far but wants to play the likes of Wrexham again next season.
He said: “The season so far has gone really well. I am pleased with our league position and the way we have been playing. We are still learning this level and have at times been punished for it but we’re enjoying it.
“I think going forward we might need to invest in a few players. If we can bulk the squad and try and push on. As I said before if we stay up in our first season it will be a fantastic achievement for everyone involved with the club.”
