If we want to be successful we need the support here, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says he wants his side to put on a good show when Staines Town visit Park View Road on Saturday. The Wings are offering discounted admission prices for all season ticket holders of Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two clubs for Saturday’s Blue Square Bet South clash.
Welling United climbed up to seventh-place in the table following their comfortable 2-0 home win over Eastbourne Borough on Tuesday, courtesy of second half goals from strikers Ross Lafayette and Keirnan Hughes-Mason.
Day wants a big crowd to flock through the turnstiles to watch the game.
“As a club they’ve done their bit to try to promote it so we need people to come to watch,” said the midfielder.
“If we want to be successful and we want to get into the play-offs, we need the support here week in week out so hopefully things like this can improve the gate and people can come out and spend their Saturday afternoon watching us because the more people we have here and the more support we have the better for the boys so hopefully there will be a good crowd and we can get another win so fingers crossed.”
Welling United are unbeaten at home so far this season and Day wants to keep Park View Road a fortress.
He said: “We’ve done well here. The pitch suits us here. Piggy does exceptionally well with the surface which helps us so hopefully we can keep that going.
“Teams aren’t going to come here and make it easy for us so it’s down to us to break them down and it’s down to us to perform week in week out home and away.”
When asked what he is expecting from Marcus Gayle’s side on Saturday, Day replied, “I think it will be tough. They’re a young side. They’re going to come here and be enthusiastic, going to be lively, get around the pitch, hard to break down.
“We need to be patient at times, but at the same time we need to make sure that we’re on the front foot and there’s a good tempo and we play with a bit of quality at times and hopefully when we get a chance we put it away.”
Day confirmed that he is working on a tight budget again this season and revealed he is not looking to bring in fresh faces.
He said: “At the minute I’ve spent my budget. We’re happy with what we’ve got. Obviously we’d like to add to it if we can but obviously I know money’s tight and I’ve got the most that I can have, which is obviously good from my point of view, but I will not be using any more money at the moment.
Day guided Welling United to third-place in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South last season and were denied promotion back into the top-flight of non-league football after they lost 1-0 to Dartford in front of a packed house at Princes Park Stadium in the play-off final.
Day said: “We knew we had a tough start but we need to be positive. We’re not too far from the top. We don’t need to be top at this stage of the season so I think it will be a good league.
“I think there’s six or seven teams that could possibly win it or be in with a good shout.
“We’ve got no given right to just turn up and beat teams but if we get the same level of performance as Tuesday night then we’ll get another three points and that’s all we can ask for.
“But we’ve got two wins out of six and we have to try to aim for 20 wins if possible so we’ve got 18 more to go and 36 games to get it in so hopefully we can do it.”
Meanwhile, Welling United travel to Dartford on Friday night in the FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round.
