I have done a lot in terms of keeping the club afloat, says Bromley boss Mark Goldberg

BROMLEY manager Mark Goldberg says he has done a lot to keep the club afloat and  may leave a sinking ship at the end of the season.


The Hayes Lane outfit last picked up a point when they beat basement side Truro City 4-0 at home on 9 March and have lost their last six league games and have failed to score in their last four league outings.

Bromley lie in fifteenth-place in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South table having collected 45 points from 38 games, but need one more win to guarantee league survival because they are four points clear of third-from-bottom AFC Hornchurch, who only have a couple of games left.

The Hayes Lane faithful expected that victory to be against fellow strugglers Hayes & Yeading United yesterday, but Goldberg’s side suffered a crushing 4-0 home defeat.

And with games coming up against Eastleigh (sixth-place), Maidenhead United (19^th), Boreham Wood (seventh) and third-placed Dover Athletic, time is running out to avoid a return to the Ryman Premier League.

Goldberg told www.footballexclusives.co.uk  : “When I made a mistake, I always put my hands up and accept it.  I’m not getting a response. Certain players seem to have made up their minds and aren’t playing to be here next season.

“Players like Danny (Waldren) and Mike (Jones) showed in the second half that they play for the team and they want to be here next season.

“Some players showed that they care less than others, which makes the ones that do care, have to work even harder.”

Goldberg, who has guided the club to this season’s London Senior Cup (Sponsored by Coventry Scaffolding) Final, when they will lock horns with either Kingstonian or tenants Cray Wanderers at the end of the month, insists the club must live within their means.

He said: “I know some fans haven’t just wanted me to go (yesterday), they’ve wanted me to go for a few years.  The question is, do I leave a sinking ship?

“Well, I will never leave a sinking ship, but I’m quite happy to go next year.  I will certainly offer to do so, if I have failed this year.

“Budgets need to be cut and you cannot just be a manager at non-league level. There’s a lot that changes what goes on, on the pitch that fans will never know.

“I will always do what’s right. I have put my heart and soul into this club and have taken bullets for my players and for the fans, bullets they will never know were fired. 

“I have done a lot in terms of keeping the club afloat.

“The fans can get what they want when the time is right and I’m more than happy to walk away.  I don’t need to take some of the abuse I get.  At the end of the day, we need to continue to make sure the hold thing doesn’t fold.”
