I just think the big thing in this level is consistency, says Welling skipper Jack Parkinson

WELLING UNITED skipper Jack Parkinson urges his team mates to remain consistent during the course of the season, writes Stephen McCartney. The 22-year-old opened his goalscoring account for the new season by glancing home the winner as the Wings fought back from 2-0 down to beat Tonbridge Angels 3-2 at Park View Road on Tuesday night.
The Wings are level on points with Dartford in second place in the Blue Square Bet South table after kicking off their campaign with a home draw against Staines Town, before beating Havant & Waterlooville, Farnborough and Tonbridge Angels.
“I think we have been playing well to be honest,” said Parkinson. “The big win was at Havant the other night. I think going away from home and getting a result against a team that’s always going to be there or there abouts, that’s kicked us on a little bit.
“We didn’t play poorly against Staines, but we didn’t deserve to win the game, but I think the last three games we’ve been good and we need to take that form into Saturday and Monday.”
The Wings welcome Eastbourne Borough to Park View Road on Saturday, before a trip to the other side of the Dartford Tunnel to Thurrock follows on Bank Holiday Monday. Both games kicking off at 3pm.
“When you’re winning, you feel a little bit more confident, so the more games the more the merrier really,” added Parkinson.
Parkinson, who attracted the attentions of both Southend United and Stevenage during the summer, knows what it takes to make this season a successful one.
“I just think the big thing in this level is consistency,” he said. “I think you need to be consistent throughout the course of the season and (if you) turn your defeats into draws and turn your draws into wins, you’re going to be there or there abouts.
“You’re not going to win every game but I think you need to make sure you are consistent and there were a few times last year we went away from home and at home (where) we dropped points where good sides really would’ve probably got a draw.
“The fact that the lads have been together a bit longer now, it will only push us on and help us this season.”
When asked what the aspirations are inside the dressing room, Parkinson sat on the fence.
He said: “Too early to say! There’s 38 games to go so all we want to do is take every game as it comes as they all say.
“It’s easy to stand here now and say ‘yes, we want to get into the play-off’s or we want to win the league,’ realistically we just have to make sure we win Saturday, win Monday and take that sort of form into Woking, which should be a decent game, the following week.”
Welling United boss, Jamie Day, meanwhile, revealed he may rotate his squad with two games in three days coming up.
Day, who is currently ruled out with a knee injury, said: “We’ve got three big games and two tough games over the weekend where we’ve got to try and pick up as many points as possible.
“Obviously the Woking one (at home) the following week, so hopefully we can keep everyone fit and no doubt we’ll rotate it around for a couple of games and use the whole squad of players that we’ve got.”
