I'll be pleased with midtable, admits Borough boss Miles - EXCLUSIVE
Monday 13th August 2007
Greenwich Borough boss Phil Miles was pleased that his side came away from Deal Town on Saturday with all three points in the bag, writes Stephen McCartney.
A brace from Badar Mohammed helped Miles’ men come away from the Charles Sports Ground with a 2-1 win on the opening day of the Kent League season.“As I said to you last week, it’s not the easiest place to go,” Miles said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk. “We would have quite happily taken a draw down there.
“To our credit, we started the game very well, and played quite well for the first thirty minutes.
“Deal got themselves back into the game in fairness, and we probably shaded the first half, to be fair.
“In the second half we expected them to put us under pressure, which they did.
“But we nicked a goal on the break but they got a goal back.
“We didn’t keep the two-nil lead long enough and we put ourselves under a little bit of pressure by giving away sloppy free-kicks and one thing that Deal do, they have a good presence on a free-kick and put you under pressure.
“We probably deserved the win but if it ended in a draw, I wouldn’t have been disappointed.”
Beckenham Town kick-off their Kent League campaign at Harrow Meadow on Tuesday night, and Miles is expecting another tough game.
He said: “It’s going to be tough. I think our first six games are extremely tough.
“We play Beckenham, who are a good side, Holmesdale Saturday, who are an unknown quantity coming out of the Kent County League and Lordswood are always a tough side to play against.
“And we play VCD, who are probably the favourites to win it, and then we play Erith & Belvedere.
“If we come through each week undefeated, we’ll be pleased but we’ve got our own targets but we don’t go broadcasting what we’re going to do.
“You set yourself out for a fall (if you make predictions). If we finish in the top half, we’ll be pleased.”
Two-goal hero down on the coast, striker, Badar Hohammed received praise from the former Slade Green manager.
“We pulled him out of the reserves last year,” he said. “He’s very raw with bags of ability. We have to work on him as he’s not yet the finished article.”
Right-back, Peter Smith, serves the second of his four-match ban on Tuesday night and left-back, Danny Moore is expected to be ruled out of the south London derby with an ankle injury.
Jack Baines, a left-back, is available following suspension and Borough will hand Parisian, 26-year-old central midfielder, Wilfred Gnaly his debut, having signed from Bromley.
