I’m delighted that Jake and Kurtis have agreed to stay for the new season, says Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED boss Jamie Day has announced that two of his key members of his title-winning squad have agreed new deals to stay at Park View Road.

The Wings sealed the Conference South title after collecting 86 points from their 42 games and finished four points clear of full-time outfit Salisbury City, who sealed promotion after beating third-placed Dover Athletic 3-2 (after extra time) in Sunday’s play-off final.

Midfielder Jake Gallagher and forward Kurtis Guthrie have penned new one-year deals to stay at Park View Road.

Day told the club’s official website www.pitchero.com/clubs/wellingutd: “I’m delighted that Jake and Kurtis have agreed to stay for the new season.

“Both were key members of the squad last season and they developed their games as the season went on.

“I’m looking forward to working with them again this year and I know they are both looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Former Millwall youngster Gallagher joined the club early last season and went on to make 40 appearances in the heart of the Welling midfield.

Guthrie, meanwhile, came to the Wings in pre-season but quickly departed for Both City.  However, he returned before Christmas to help fire the Wings to promotion back to the Conference Premier.

However, it took him 25 games to score for the Kent club but finished his draught with a bang, scoring an eighteen-minute hat-trick against Weston-super-Mare in April.  He then wrapped the season up in spectacular style with a volley against Eastleigh on the last day of the season.

Meanwhile, the club have released central defender Ben Martin, midfielder Scott Kinch and striker Jon Main.

A club statement said: “Jon Main left the club after not being offered terms for next season.

“Main scored six goals for the Wings this season, including the last minute winner against Staines Town.

“Welling United would like to thank Jon for all his efforts this year and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Meanwhile, Welling United’s two central defenders, Anthony Acheampong and Fraser Franks have both been called up for England C’s match in Bermuda on Tuesday, 4 June.
