I'm delighted to be back, says Binks - EXCLUSIVE
Steve Binks is relishing another stint as Chatham Town’s manager, following the resignation of Phil Miles this weekend, writes Stephen McCartney.
Miles, 38, told chairman Jeff Talbot that he had stepped down as manager at 9 o’clock this morning, as he’s starting a new job as a bricklayers lecturer at South Kent College in Ashford tomorrow.
Northfleet based Miles had told his players immediately after yesterday’s 3-0 defeat at Whitstable Town his decision to resign, and despite being asked to think about it over night by his chairman, Miles had already made his mind up as he cannot devote 100% commitment to the club due to his new work commitments.
Miles had replaced Binks at the helm at the start of last season, but Binks is relishing the chance of another stint as first-team boss, after working as the club's commercial manager whilst Miles was in charge.
Binks will have Steve Best and Alan Collins, who worked alongside Miles, as his back room staff.
Binks, who lives nearby in Rainham, would like to celebrate his 57th birthday on Thursday with two victories over two struggling sides this week.
Although in the bottom five themselves, with four wins and five draws from their 17 Ryman League Division One South outings, Chatham travel to second from bottom side Horsham YMCA on Tuesday night, before welcoming basement boys Molesey to Maidstone Road next Saturday.
“We’ve got over the next four or five games teams all around us,” Binks said EXCLUSIVELY to www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight.
“Horsham YMCA, Molesey, Chipstead and Corinthian Casuals, they’re games to pick up points.
“Horsham YMCA have picked up some useful draws of late but we’re capable of beating top sides and losing to bottom sides - it’s a funny old game.”
Loyal-servant Binks, meanwhile, admitted that he’s sorry to see Miles step down from the role as first team manager.
“I know he’s obviously got his mind on his situation on his new job and difficulty committing to the club,” explained Binks.
“I was in a similar position myself when I stood down, so I can symphonise with him and wish him all the best - but delighted to be back in charge.
“I’ve helped out in the off occasion for a couple of games when Phil’s not been 100% with his back.
“I hate watching the game being a supporter. I’d much rather be involved, influencing the game in the dug-out, dressing room and at training - so delighted to be involved again.”
This afternoon it was thought that Binks, Best and Collins would be in charge on a temporary basis, but Binks added: “It’s until the end of the season and reviewed at the end of the season, results permitting.”
He revealed that he’s going to keep faith with the same squad that put in a “poor performance” at The Belmont yesterday.
But he has faith in the talented youngsters currently at the Maidstone Road club to turn around the club’s fortunes.
“As I’ve said to you before, this club has got some fantastic young players coming up,” said Binks.
“If we can hang onto those, we’ve lost a few, the club has got a bright future.
“If I can encourage them, I’m hopeful and optimistic that we can go forward from here.
“I’ve been at the club 12-13 years so I’ve seen the players and know them well and what they’re capable off.
“The problem I’m going to have once players get fit, there’s some good strength in depth and it’s hard to pick the best side to get some rhythm and consistency.
“I’m really excited. There’s some cracking youngsters with enthusiasm, loads of pace and if I can encourage and inspire them to play football, we can go on from here.
“There’s a lot of potential at this club. There’s some good experience through the spine with some cracking youngsters coming through.
“If we can keep positive and try and get the best out of them, the one thing I can do is get the best out f players and see if we can push on from here.”
