I'm really pleased Parkinson and Pires have stayed, says Welling United boss Jamie Day
Friday 29th July 2011
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day has confirmed that influential skipper, Jack Parkinson, 21, and Loick Pires are both staying at the club, writes Stephen McCartney.Welling had set a deadline of the end of last week for League Two clubs Stevenage and Crewe Alexandra to sign the pair but talks have ended and both players will remain at the Blue Square Bet South club for the time being.
Both had impressed at their trials but an injury cut short Pires’ time at Crewe after scoring a goal against Newcastle Town and versatile Parkinson also had a trial with Southend United, playing in the first half of their 3-0 win at Dartford.
This means that the majority of the first team from last season will start the new campaign against Staines Town on 13 August.
Day, who takes his side to Kent League side VCD Athletic tomorrow, said: “I’m really pleased they have stayed. They’re two big players for us, which hopefully can perform to the level we expect next season and hopefully get us near the play-off places.”
