I'm so pleased for Scott Lindsey, says Folkestone boss Neil Cugley

FOLKESTONE INVICTA boss Neil Cugley declared Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Concord Rangers a “fair result” in wet and windy conditions at the Buzzlines Stadium.

Speaking to the Official Club website www.folkestoneinvicta.co.uk he said: “I would've been very disappointed not to have got a goal and I don't think we deserved to lose. They were a very strong side who have been doing well and they've got experience and quality with a few ex Chelmsford players in their side.”

Invicta conceded an unfortunate goal after a rare error by goalkeeper Jack Delo gave the visitors the lead in the second half.

Cugley said: “Jack will be very disappointed with the one we conceded - along with the second on Tuesday (away at Leiston) - and it's one he's got to save.

“We've got every confidence in his ability and he is an excellent keeper and now is the time where he needs to show his maturity and mental strength to come back.”

Cugley changed the formation of his side, deploying Josh Burchell and Darren Smith alongside James Everitt in attack whilst Luke Webb came into the midfield trio alongside Micheal Everitt and Roland Edge.

“For Webby it is a big jump from when he was playing for Lydd but I don't think he seemed phased by it and he is a tidy player with a nice left foot,” praised Cugley.

“He didn't do a lot wrong and as his confidence grows he'll be able to have a greater influence in there and I certainly think you can say he'll be there or thereabouts for Tuesday.

“We went to a flat back four and I think they did very well; JV (Josh Vincent) has improved his defensive game very well, Chaps (Frankie Chappell) and Friendy (Liam Friend) were outstanding along with Dicko (Liam Dickson) who was also carrying a knock. We decided to put Burch further forward as his attacking play has been very good lately.

“Did it work? I'm not sure on that one but we do need to try and be more positive in our attacking play and we'll keep working on things to make us more exciting in the final third. With key players missing like Jonesy (Paul Jones) and Kems (Robbie Kember) it is a good opportunity to try different things as otherwise our system can be too predictable.”

Invicta's equaliser came courtesy of Simon Austin as the Folkestone boss took off Liam Dickson and Micheal Everitt for Austin and Peter Williams as the Seasiders went in search of an equaliser.

Cugley said: “I thought Austo came on and did well and along with Pete Williams they livened us up and it was nice to have a couple of forwards on the bench. Austo took a shot which we don't do often enough and it got a deflection but we deserved our equaliser.”

Folkestone's injury hit squad could be boosted in the coming week with Cugley hopeful that duo Rob Kember (thigh) and Paul Jones (groin) could make their return for the away trip to Cray Wanderers next weekend or for the home clash against Worthing in the F.A Trophy a week later as a precautionary measure.

James Dryden has a ‘cleaning up' operation on his knee this week and could make his return to the side at the end of the month or in early November. Olly Bartrum has undergone a similar operation and should make a return to light training this week.

The manager is still talking to a couple of attacking players but reiterated that anyone coming into the squad would have to be offset by a departure to balance the playing budget.

“We've now got two tough games coming up against Hornchurch and Cray and I spoke to the Tonbridge manager (after the Angels thrashed AFC Hornchurch 7-1) and he said it was one of those games where everything they hit went in, so we'll be expecting a reaction from them on Tuesday night,” warned Cugley.
“Cray have been excellent recently and are on a good run of form so we know we're in for a tough test ahead”.

Non-League fans have noticed this week that former Seasiders player-coach Scott Lindsey has been appointed caretaker manager of League Two side Lincoln City following the departure of Chris Sutton.

Lindsey was a popular figure during his time at Cheriton Road, highly renowned in all quarters for his inspirational leadership on and off the field and for his infectious enthusiasm.

“I've heard he's been given a few games to give the job a go and to be fair to Chris Sutton, he recommended Scott to the Lincoln chairman before he left,” added Cugley.

“They were unlucky away at Southend and we've spoken and I've sent him various texts recently and if he got the job on a permanent basis that would be brilliant and I'd be so pleased for him.
“I've never seen a more enthusiastic person in football than Scott Lindsey and his love for football and during his time with us and everything we went through, I never heard him moan once, he just got on with the job”.
