I'm struggling to put a team out, admits Fisher boss Steve Firkins

FISHER boss Steve Firkins still faces an injury crisis for their trip to struggling Sevenoaks Town on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The former Greenwich Borough boss spoke about the severity of the club’s injury list following their disappointing goal-less draw against Cray Valley (Paper Mills) on Monday night.

Firkins lost striker Danny Hunt to a groin strain during the warm-up and also lost three players through injury before the start of the second half - right-back Kyle Demetris (dead leg), striker Junior James (hamstring) and Danny Hubbard (dead leg).

Skipper, Jamie Turner battled on with a hamstring problem he sustained during the second half, and Firkins also had Kobi DeGraft-Johnson (broken nose), Billy Walton (broken wrist), George Kendall (ankle ligaments), Charlie Helps (ligament), Steve O’Donnell (broken fibula/dislocated ankle/ligament damage) all unavailable.

“We’re struggling, I’ll be struggling to put a team out,” admitted Firkins.

Firkins is now thankful for having such a large squad available to him at Champion Hill.

He said: “Everybody had a pop at me about it. I still managed to put a full bench out there on Monday night.

“Saturday might be a bit of a problem.  Yes (having a large squad) has worked.  I wish it hadn’t to be honest.  I wish I hadn’t have a problem of trying to pick out of 30 or whatever I signed.   At the moment as one drops we’re managing to put one in but it’s how long we can keep going on like that, I don’t know.

Fisher dropped down to fifth place in the Kent League table following their first goal-less draw of the season and travel to Greatness Park to play a side that have won only one of their seven league games and have only Holmesdale below them in the table.

Firkins predicted a top-three finish in pre-season, after the club finished rooted to the bottom of the table under former boss Gary Lisney last season.

Firkins said: “We needed to get away from the bottom of the table so we’ve achieved that at least.  We’re not down with the bottom sides.   We’re up where we’d like to be.  Obviously we’d like to be a little better off at the moment, it’s still early days.

“Hopefully we’ve got a few lads to come back and if we can just dig in for the next couple of weeks and get a few results we’ll build on that and when the fellas start coming back a little bit fitter, it’s just a case of getting out what we can until we’re fully recovered.”
