I think we could have done a bit better, admits Beckenham Town boss Jason Huntley

BECKENHAM TOWN boss Jason Huntley says his side could have done better this season. They leapfrogged over Tunbridge Wells into fifth-place in the Kent Hurlimann Football League table after Jake Hobbs’ 28th goal of the season, six minutes into stoppage time, grabbed a point away to struggling Sevenoaks Town last Monday night.
When asked whether he is pleased with a top-five finish, Huntley replied, “If you asked me at the beginning of the season, I would’ve said yes, because we changed the whole of the team and this year for the team to gel as quickly as it has, we didn’t expect that.
“Obviously we had a little Cup run in the Vase and FA Cup, which put us a few games behind, but if you’d asked me at the beginning of the season I would’ve taken top six.
“Now, maybe, I’d be disappointed because I think we could’ve done a bit better.”
Huntley is already planning for next season, one that he hopes to finally fulfil his talented team’s potential and go all the way.
“There’s going to be a lot happening,” revealed Huntley. “I say it to you every year, but we’re bringing in a few players who we’ve got our eye on now.
“The majority of players we’d like to keep. We’ll find it hard to keep some of them because they are good and they can definitely play at the next level.
“If we can keep them, with a couple of additions, I don’t think we’ll do too bad next year. I hope to be challenging.”
And Huntley says his side must clinch promotion out of the Kent League next season as he believes it will be even harder the following season.
He said: “If they’re (The Football Association) going to merge the League’s the year after it’s going to be difficult to get out of it, so next year everyone has to try to get out of the League.”
Huntley takes his side to champions Herne Bay on Saturday, who are opening their gates for everybody to enjoy their title winning celebrations, with free admission.
“So they should be, they’ve won the League and done exceptionally well this year and good luck to them,” said Huntley, as he prepares to face the FA Vase semi-finalists.
“I’d rather not be down there with them partying but we’ll do what we have to do on Saturday. We’ll have our day out, it’s our last game of the season, a trip there and a trip home will be good for us. We’re all going out that night so its end of season party time for us as well.”
