I think we're better than a mid-table side, says Woodstock Sports assistant Scott Appleton

WOODSTOCK SPORTS assistant manager Scott Appleton says his players are capable of finishing their fourth Kent League campaign in the top-five.
The club, based at Woodstock Park in rural Sittingbourne, booked their place in the semi-finals of the Macron Kent League Cup following their 5-4 aggregate win over Erith Town.

Ben Taylor’s side got off to a flying start on Monday night as Chris Walker’s headed own-goal gave them the lead after just 85 seconds to bring both sides level, as Erith Town won the game at Woodstock Park by a single goal.

James McDonald took his tally for the season to sixteen with a brace, before Louis Valencia and right-back John Emmerson (penalty) scored in the final ten minutes as Woodstock won an exciting game 5-3 on the night.

They will be joined by Corinthian, Herne Bay and VCD Athletic in the semi-final draw, which will be made on BBC Radio Kent on Saturday.

Woodstock travel to Park View Road to play third-placed side Erith & Belvedere on Saturday and Appleton says what he wants against Micky Collins’ side.

He said: “A massive performance because last season they done us 7-0 and I think this season they done us 7-1 at home so we do owe them one.

“They can’t go into Saturday, my side, having no confidence after a game like Monday.  They should be on cloud nine.”

Woodstock have finished in 11^th, 11^th and ninth place in their three previous Kent League campaigns and Appleton has targeted an even better finish this term.

They are currently in eighth place in the Kent Hurlimann Football League table with 31 points from 19 games and have eleven league games left to play.

Appleton said: “We’re not a mid-table side.  I think we’re better than a mid-table side.

“Against Erith Town we showed how good our team is.  On another occasion we go to Fisher and lose 2-1.  It’s a consistency thing with it.  We’re in the fourth year now in the Kent League and we deserve a Cup run and to do well in one of the Cups.

“We set ourselves as a top-five club.   We can do better than that if we learn from games like Monday night.  There’s no point winning (against Erith Town) if we go into Saturday and don’t learn anything.”
