It is quite important we finish second, says Dover Athletic assistant Jake Leberl

DOVER ATHLETIC assistant manager Jake Leberl says it’s important for his club to finish in second place in the table.

The Whites are presently sitting in third-place in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South table with 67 points from 36 games, two points behind second-placed Salisbury City.

They produced an emphatic 3-0 victory away to fellow play-off hopefuls Chelmsford City on Easter Monday, courtesy of goals from Ricky Modeste, Ben May and stand-in skipper Danny Webb.

Leberl told www.doverathletic.com: “They started well but seemed to lose some belief after Mitchell (Walker) saved Jamie Slabber’s penalty.

"They have had some dodgy results recently and seem to be going through a tough time at the moment and we are a hard team to get at."

Dover Athletic face Basingstoke Town at Crabble tomorrow, looking to add to their ten-match unbeaten run since manager Chris Kinnear and Leberl took over, following Nicky Forster’s departure.

“The top four will probably change between now and the end of the season,” said Leberl.

“It is quite important we finish second but each team we potentially could face raises a different set of challenges and they are all up there for a reason.

“The play-offs are a good thing in my opinion as it creates lots of excitement.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Daryl McMahon is likely to be welcomed back in the fold after missing the last two games due to work commitments:

Leberl said: "We're not looking to fall out with anyone, especially as part-time football is tough and you cannot please everyone all the time. If selected it will be on merit, but after Monday's win we now have a selection dilemma. Myself and Chris have some serious thinking to do."
